Hey look Lush responded to my request- https://www.facebook.com/lushcosmetics/posts/10151786404419058?comment_id=29250561&offset=0&total_comments=3&notif_t=feed_comment

On the topic of Lush, look on their FaceBook “about” section, they claim proudly “60% Unpreserved”. Is that supposed to be a GOOD thing? In what world? One without harmful microbes? Blek! Someone please tell Lush thats like bragging you haven’t washed your feet in a month. I always had a problem with their products not lasting long enough.

I don’t even know what “60% unpreserved” means. Do they use 60% less preservatives? Do 60% of their products not contain preservatives? It makes no sense to me.

It means 60 percent of their products aren’t preserved. At first I thought it meant something else which made no sense. I emailed them about making a sunscreen but they can’t because they would have to register as a pharmaceuticals company. Do you think having sunscreen as a drug limits innovation? I think it would be better if sunscreen was considered a cosmetic like in Europe. They have more ingredients and she said in the UK they do have a sunscreen.

    The email response-

    “Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to email us and for your interest in LUSH!

Unfortunately, we do not carry any products that provide sun protection. In order to sell products displaying an SPF rating in North America, we would be required to register as a pharmaceutical company. Since this is not an option that is suitable for Lush at all, we are unfortunately not able to offer products with an SPF rating.

That said, this is not the case for Lush UK, and they carry a lovely moisturizer called British Nanny that has an SPF of 30, so it provides plenty of sun protection!

    Thank you for your suggestion!

The “60% unpreserved” claim could be also due to the fact that they make a majority of solid products & it is my understanding that solids require little to no preservatives?

That’s a good point. Solids typically require less preservation because their water activity is so low. But once a solid sits in a damp area (think shower) it can pick up enough water to grow bugs.

I don’t think that British Nanny moisturizer is very well thought out. It has photosensitivizing essential oil mixed with sunscreen?  dafaq?

I think Lush’s products in general are overpriced and not well thought out. Anything being used in a damp area like a shower should be preserved properly. Its obviously not going to be kept dry so there is ample opportunity for microbial growth.
