I have heard from friends and seen on several haircare sites people using the “Max Hydration Method” on their natural african american hair. The steps include clarifying with Apple Cider Vinegar or Baking Soda which they claim lifts the cuticle and allows the hair to absorb more moisture. After the clarifying there is a deep conditioner application followed by a clay rinse all in hopes of getting your hair to hold as much moisture as posdible. Is there any scientific proof to back up this hair regimen?

No. Apple Cider Vinegar does not lift the cuticle. Also, lifting the cuticles is bad for the hair because the process is not reversible – it does NOT allow hair to absorb more moisture. A clay rinse does not increase moisture retention.
