I usually apply some kind of leave in serum or cream after shampoo and conditioner. Is it OK to use the leave in products before coloring? I usually clarify before coloring so I don’t want to be a frizzy, dry mess when I get my highlights done. Or maybe coconut oil would be OK?
It depends on a lot of factors like the porosity of your hair, what ingredients are in the products you’re applying, how much of the products remain on your hair, what coloring products you’re using, and how those products are applied.
I would check with a colorist on this one (or else just experiment on your own to see what works for you.)
What about coconut oil used pre-bleach? There is this trend nowadays to apply oil soaks before bleach, but I’ve never seen any research showing whether it does anything particularly protective. Maybe the reasoning is similar to the reasoning behind why hairdressers recommend applying bleach on dirty/oily hair rather than freshly washed hair?
I’m not a hair colorist so I don’t know. But I do know that coconut oil waterproofs the hair from the inside out. And since the hair color dye molecules are water soluble, the coconut oil could prevent the dye from being absorbed as well.
