So I know there are Surfactant based cleansers like Neutrogena fresh Foaming Cleanser, Very gentle low surfactant formulas like Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser. There is a new type of cleanser that I am not able to decide if it is better or worse than the ones mentioned above. This has natural oils like Coconut Oil, Olive Oil etc + Sodium Hydroxide. The manufacturer  claims that this is not Soap but a surfactant and since it is 100% natural, this is milder than any surfactant based facial cleanser. Is this possible? It certainly is not a bar soap but I worry about the Ph, Drying effect or comedogenicity.

Hey WD. First of all, this produce IS a soap because it consists of fatty acids (from oils) reacted with lye (sodium hydroxide.) Of course it is also a surfactant because all soaps are surfactants but not all surfactants are soaps.

Based on the data we’ve seen this type of soap is NOT as mild as certain surfactants. Check out this episode for more soapy details: http://thebeautybrains.com/2015/02/10/are-bar-cleansers-bad-for-skin-episode-69/
