So I know there are Surfactant based cleansers like Neutrogena fresh Foaming Cleanser, Very gentle low surfactant formulas like Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser. There is a new type of cleanser that I am not able to decide if it is better or worse than the ones mentioned above. This has natural oils like Coconut Oil, Olive Oil etc + Sodium Hydroxide. The manufacturer claims that this is not Soap but a surfactant and since it is 100% natural, this is milder than any surfactant based facial cleanser. Is this possible? It certainly is not a bar soap but I worry about the Ph, Drying effect or comedogenicity.
Hey WD. First of all, this produce IS a soap because it consists of fatty acids (from oils) reacted with lye (sodium hydroxide.) Of course it is also a surfactant because all soaps are surfactants but not all surfactants are soaps.
