Hi Randy, if you use a actual bar soap in the shower while conditioner is in your hair can small amounts of soap residue left over on your hands affect the cationic conditioners in the conditioner when you rinse?  Could that that “after-feel” of soap that almost gives a draggy feel be counteracting the conditioner, or am I just over-thinking this entirely?

It’s theoretically possible but I doubt it. Why don’t you do this simple test: Shampoo and condition half your head without having soap on your hands. Then, lather up as usual and condition your hair with the soap residue. It’s not a perfect test because it’s not blinded but at least you can see if there’s an obvious difference.
