I totally agree with the Reddit opinion piece.  Though – on the one side the “lack of marketing” and simple packaging and labels on The Ordinary puts all the focus on the ingredients, which I like.

Through on an Italian skin-care forum there are some questions of how, even with the economies of scale, they can have such low prices and there is a strong suspicion that there is more water than we think in those formulas (specifically Buffet – which I asked about there).  One day, someone will test the contents of the formulas independently and put that suspicion to bed.  I know that, at least for me Niacinamide and Vitamin C (which I hate but still use) have some visible effects – the jury is still out on Buffet, Matryxyl and the Caffine Eye serum (I stopped using it because it burns my eyes now).  I saw my favorite Vlogger (Hot and Flashy) test the Buffet and there were no visible changes after 30 days – she saw small changes and wanted to keep using it but posts before/after photos for viewers to see and they looked the same to me.

Personally,  I can’t get over the price and tone of the descriptions of the NIOD line.  The jars are just too old-school unhygienic for my taste, too.

I really don’t believe Brandon when he said on the Hirons blog response that he looked at all packaging options and they decided to spend more on glass bottles and droppers.  When I look at all of my beauty and ant-aging creams there are tons of packaging options, including pump heads on a plastic tube, flip-tops, pull-tops, push-tops (where you push one end and the spout comes up in the other), and a world of pumps and sprayers that can deal with liquids and suspensions of different viscosities.  So, maybe he wasn’t PRESENTED with all of the available packaging options – but it is much more likely that the packaging is there to reinforce the marketing message.
I’m going to read through the Vitamin C post now.  I’m conflicted on using it altogether.  I know I need it.  But I don’t like that every beauty product out there fades my freckles.  They’re not age spots – they’re decoration (apparently people are getting them tattoed on, now – hahaha)!  I’ve spent my whole childhood hating them, young-adulthood covering them and now that I’m of a “certain age” I’ve finally come to accept and enjoy them.  But every dang thing I apply wants to fade them. : /
    Ciao,
