I know, I’m revealing what a product whore I’ve truly become. I’m in an experimenting phase right now. So I’m trying liquid makeup, and I read about a facial sunscreen that supposedly plays well with liquid makeup. So I tried it. It’s 6% zinc oxide and 2.5% titanium dioxide. It is invisible–and I mean invisible, not a hint of white–even when applied generously. This makes me worry that I’m not getting any sun protection, as I’ve never met a pure physical block without any hint of a white cast. Should I worry? Is this zinc just super micronized?
May 31, 2015 at 1:43 pm #94800RandySMemberIf you can post a link to the product I’ll take a look at it.
May 31, 2015 at 8:30 pm #94801sarahfMemberThanks, Randy. And I know it’s way overpriced, by the way. The issue is I was desperate because I’ve had so many problems with mineral sunscreens changing the texture/color of makeup. I need a mineral sunscreen because of sensitivity. A blogger took the time to actually test how makeup goes on over various mineral sunscreens and this was her favorite for under makeup. So I’m just rationalizing the price… With that, here goes:
May 31, 2015 at 8:31 pm #94802sarahfMemberIt says it has a “smart tint,” but honestly, in my hand, it’s chalk white. Weird.
June 1, 2015 at 1:14 pm #94803RandySMemberAs you pointed out they use Titanium Dioxide at 2.5% and Zinc Oxide 6%. Those levels are on the which is on the low end for these ingredients which may explain why you get less whitening. Of course, I assume they’re using the micronized form as you point out.
This is not a major brand so I hope they’ve done the proper testing to ensure this product delivers an SPF 30. Just make sure you apply about 1/2 tsp to your face.June 2, 2015 at 1:59 am #94807ArgonOilsTheNuRadiumMemberYou know, it’s weird. I was thinking that was pretty low too, the zinc and titanium-d %s in your sunscreen. It isn’t even a tinted moisturizer, primer with UV, or an (a) AA, BB, CC, DD, cream all with the typical super low UV protective shenanigans. I’ve actually seen some tinted moisturizers, makeups, and AA, BB, CC, DD creams with some decent UV coverage too, so I can’t say that like it’s an industry stereotype to add low UV coverage as a frill.
Micronized? Erm? What’s that? I’m in a rare mood where googling seems bleh, and I am also crunched for time. I’m assuming it’s where they shrunk it down some how? Wouldn’t that potentially be super good for getting antioxidants into your skin, but not really effective for something that needs to be on the surface of your skin, protecting it? I don’t know though. Can someone explain how micronizing works, and how it’s a good idea for sunscreen?
@ Sarah. ( A bit off topic!) I thought of this the other day and been meaning to mention it to you. I had an idea, and it may be worth a shot if you like trying products, and don’t mind paying for something probably works, and possibly eases your skin’s symptoms. This is based off of a bit of background info I happened to know on lasers, medicine, and also, I checked if my theory was sound, and it turns out it’s an actual treatment for your symptoms…. O.O Lol,
pulsed dye laser treatments. And I think there is an at home acne gadget that fits that description out there If I’m not mistaken, but does heat up if I remember right, so it will trigger symptoms at first during treatment, but it’ll look better as it as it heals. I know, you didn’t ask, and you prolly already know, but oh well. And speaking of lasers, there is officially better at home gadgetry than the Silkn. There is more powah to be had. I will post more when I find out. >.< I just like the idea of owning laser, it’s like mini ray guns! Pshew pshew!
June 2, 2015 at 2:25 am #94808sarahfMemberThanks, Randy. Actually, I thought 6% zinc oxide was reasonable. I have another sunscreen rated spf 46 (lol), which has 9% zinc oxide combined with octinoxate (but no titanium dioxide). That brand’s spf 30 product has 7% zinc oxide combined with octinoxate.
June 2, 2015 at 2:27 am #94809sarahfMemberMicronized–means the particles of zinc oxide are really tiny.
June 2, 2015 at 12:51 pm #94812RandySMemberAccording to the FDA Final monograph:
“This final rule includes monograph conditions for zinc oxide as a sunscreen active ingredient at concentrations up to 25 percent when used alone or in combination with any monograph sunscreen active ingredient except avobenzone.”Titanium dioxide is allowed up to 25% as well. That’s why I thought the levels seemed on the low side.June 2, 2015 at 5:19 pm #94815sarahfMemberOkay, thanks. I usually see it at the higher concentrations when it’s the only active. But granted that 2.5% titanium dioxide probably isn’t doing much… Maybe I’ll go back to my other sunscreen:)
June 4, 2015 at 3:46 am #94822ArgonOilsTheNuRadiumMember@SarahF (SPF 46? That’s kinda random) What was the octinoxate %age?
The reason I ask is because I forget the ratios, and I’d have to bust out a calculator even if I my “Sunblock Chemical to Product Ratio Chart & Other Specs and Info” sheet pulled up, but that still seems kinda low if I recall right for zinc used alone, but since it’s with octinoxate, it could be fine.@ Sarah again, So if the particles of zinc are ultra tiny like they try to do for things that go into your skin, what stops the zinc from doing just?
@ Randy Or am I wrong in thinking that how it would work? If I’m not wrong, is it still effective at that point as a sunblock if it’s partially, or mostly being absorbed into your skin?June 4, 2015 at 1:29 pm #94831RandySMemberMicronized does not automatically = absorbed by skin.
June 5, 2015 at 1:04 am #94840ArgonOilsTheNuRadiumMemberGood to know
June 7, 2015 at 2:21 am #94872sarahfMemberBy the way, I repeatedly tried to post a link to the review of mineral sunscreens that led me to the one I mentioned at the start of the thread, but it went into moderation purgatory…
Here’s the link.June 8, 2015 at 12:05 am #94875RandySMemberThat’s weird, I didn’t see any thing that was rejected. You can just cut and paste the URL text even if it’s not an active link and then I can try to convert it.
