Around 2014 the Beauty Brains posted this article about a new sunscreen ingredient called Ecamsule or Mexoryl (and a few other names!) that was coming-soon-but-not-yet-here.

Now in 2018, I wondered if it had finally made its debut, but couldn’t find much. I’m wondering if maybe it’s going by a different name these days? An example is that the old links in the article link to La-Roche Posay sunscreens that specifically say “Mexoryl” on the bottle, but now seem to be discontinued. However, an Amazon search for “mexoryl” now brings up a line of La-Roche Posay sunscreens that are labeled “Cell-Ox Shield”(with no mention of mexoryl)––is this a meaningless phrase, or is this Mexoryl in disguise? Are Mexoryl/Examsule sunscreens more common in the U.S. in 2018? If they are, where can they be found?

Also just wanted to say that I never posted on the forum until now, but I have long been a fan of the Beauty Brains podcast/blog, and will miss it. Thanks for so much wonderful and reliable information in this increasingly confused world! I am so happy the forum is still going. :)

Mexoryl can be found in La-Roche Posay sunscreens as you said.

Cell-Ox Shield is just some made up term for a technology that sounds impressive. I’m not sure if they removed the Mexoryl from that formula but you can find it in their other sunscreens I linked above.

I’d say Mexoryl is not more common in the US in 2018. Mostly because it is not technically an approved sunscreen on the sunscreen monograph. So, it’s use is strictly limited.
