Hey Randy and Perry!
First off I just want you to know how much I appreciate and love love love your podcasts. they have really changed my perspective on beauty products!
My question is about vitamin C serums.
I was hoping you could do a whole show on how to pick the perfect vitamin C serum.
I’m personally having a lot of trouble finding the right one. I’ve heard that once the vitamin c becomes yellow or orange, it becomes less effective because it has been exposed to oxygen. Would an air tight container help this?! Do you know of any air tight container ones? I’ve also heard that it’s better to start at a low active percentage and work your way up in order to avoid skin reactions (for those with sensitive skin). Is this true?
Another concern is that my vitamin serum causes very tiny breakouts over my face a few days after I use the serum (I used the jeffrey james Botanicals “The Light Age-defying c serum”). By the way, I never break out. I’ve had clear skin for as long as I could remember. This was frightening to me and I completely stopped using the serum but I still want the benefits of it! Is there a certain combination of ingredients in vitamin c serums that can avoid such breakouts?
Thanks a lot !!!!! Xoxoxo

October 16, 2016 at 6:44 am #96458preciousiaMemberWith regards to your breakouts, perhaps you can check if the product contain comedogenic ingredient. YMMV, everyone react differently to different ingredients.
the one you were using
Ingredients: Organic herbal blend, organic aloe barbadensis leaf (aloe), argan stem cells, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C), methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), cassia angustifolia seed polysaccharide (botanical hyaluronic acid), hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), l-arginine, kosher vegetable glycerin, organic simmondsia chinensis (jojoba oil), vitamin E potassium sorbate, ethyl hexyl glycerin.
18% Active Vitamin C
Paraben & Sulfate Free
Gluten Free
i ran Jeffrey James Botanicals “The Light Age-defying C serum thru the comedogenic search and this was the results ” No acne causing ingredients found“
hope this helps

October 17, 2016 at 3:33 am #96468preciousiaMember>Do you know of any air tight container ones?Drunk Elephant but they are not cheap. I use a vitamin C derivative serum which is more stable, less irritating to the skin and i decant it to an airless pump bottle myself>I’ve heard that once the vitamin c becomes yellow or orange, it becomes less effective because it has been exposed to oxygen.i find they start oxidising even before the color shows a hint of yellow (we are referring to L Ascorbic Acid, a v. oxidative unstable ingredient when suspended in water). You could consider anhydrous formulae (no water) or use the other Vitamin C derivatives.> I’ve also heard that it’s better to start at a low active percentage and work your way up in order to avoid skin reactions (for those with sensitive skin). Is this true?YES. Always start low. Actives like L Ascorbic acid can really irritate the skin for some.As always, i quote someone wise who taugh me thisMORE IS NOT BETTEREnough is Good.October 20, 2016 at 12:03 am #96498preciousiaMemberThis L Ascorbic acid vitamin C caught my eye
made by Manyo Factory (owned by AmorePacific who has 80% of the skincare market share in Korea)this band doesn’t use parabens, petrolchemicals etc, focusing on organic skincare. What is interesting is that they advises to use up the Vitamin C in 1 month and toss. Also that the vitamin C crystals is added not at the factory but by the user when you receive the item!Ingredients:Ingredients: sea buckthorn, ascorbic acid, butyleneglycol, glycerin, Niacinamide, lemon extract myrciaria, myrciaria seed extract, rosehip extract, citron extract, polyglyceryl-10 myristate, polyglyceryl-10 laurat, Masha extract, licorice extract, Lactobacillus, fermented yeast filtrate extract, cherry fruit, propanediol, beta-glucan, bilberry extract, grape seed extract, orange extract, black cherry extract, tomato extract, apricot extract, zanthoxylum extract, Pulsatilla vulgaris, usnea barbata extract, lavender angustifolia extract, acerola cherry extract, ziziphus extract, litsea cubeba.January 6, 2017 at 4:59 pm #96898FrenchBeautistaMemberI started my own 10% vitamin C serum every night, but my skin became flaky!
So, be carefull with high concentration.January 8, 2017 at 2:35 am #96899SkincarekevinMemberDermalure makes nice C serums that start at 5% and go up. They have simple ingredient lists.
January 8, 2017 at 5:28 pm #96902PeterMemberAscorbic Acid is very unstable in water, so personally I like The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension much more since this is anhydrous and only costs 6 dollars.
January 8, 2017 at 6:39 pm #96903SkincarekevinMemberOrdinary is nice, but too pore cloggy for me.
February 21, 2017 at 6:27 am #97015preciousiaMemberagree. i clogged from the best Vitamin C by the Ordinary. Vitamin C suspension contains a comedogenic rating 4 Coconut alkanes… so does the Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate.Just the presence of 1 ingredient rating 4 will render the whole product comedogenic for those who clog easily. YMMV. Not everyone’s skin react the some. The other 2 are ok though. (i hope). So far i tried the Ordinary Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% and that doesn’t clog but… the performance is sub par… tbh my Mad Hippie Vitamin C surpass this.I’ll try the Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution next.February 22, 2017 at 2:19 pm #97027preciousiaMemberreferencing the vitamin C suggestions @Lemon asked about November last year. I wonder if Lemon is still lurking around… if so… let us know how you go with Timeless Serum!
