What’s lipstick primer all about?

Hi! From what I know, lipstick primers are meant to hydrate the lips (as any balm should), but also help the liptick glide easily and keep the color from bleeding.

I’ve been trying to compare different formulas of liquid/solid/pencil primers versus the colored lipsticks, and I believe there is a bigger percentage of:
    • Powders (silica, mica, etc), to keep the color from bleeding
    • Solvents (isododecane, polybutene, octyldodecanol), to help with the spreadability

I know it is very hard to compare formulas with different consistencies… But whether its a stick or a gloss, the goal is still the same…

So is this right, or am I missing something?

If can post the ingredient list for a specific product I can take a look at it for you.

To answer your original question, yes, the “goal is still the same” regardless of the product form. The elf product appears to more of just a colorless lipstick; the pencil primer is also quite waxy; and the liquid product seems the most different in terms of spreadability and because it contains talc.

Thanks a lot for your answer :) Can you also confirm the function of the powders and solvents I hypothesized in mu question?

You’re correct. Although some of the hydrocarbons you mentioned are probably functioning as emollients more than solvents.

Ok :) I’m writing a blog post about primers and I’d like to point some differences from the coloured products. The lip primer was the one that was missing :D

Send me the link when you’re done. I’d love to read it.

I can, but it’s written in portuguese… Maybe google translator can help you read it :)
