Is Ojon Restorative Treatment Any Good?

by Right Brain on May 24, 2006 · 86 comments

Anonymous Asks:
I was curious about what you thought of the Ojon products, specifically their restorative hair treatment. Is this any better than other products, and how would it work to improve your hair?

Try Ojon Now!

The Right Brain Responds:
Ojon’s oil treatment consists of palm oil, fragrance, and a few extracts. It’s particularly interesting because recent research has shown that only SOME oils will actually penetrate the hair. Mineral oil and sunflower oil, for example, will not penetrate.  But coconut oil (which is essentially the same as palm oil) will filter deep into the cortex because it is so similar to hair’s natural lipids.

Why is that a big deal? Because the natural oils in your hair help make it flexible and waterproof. Washing your hair removes some of these natural oils. So it is possible that applying coconut oil to your hair can fight some of the effects of this oil loss. Once inside the hair, the oil serves as a re-fatting agent.

However, this type of conditioning won’t have much effect on the cuticle, the outer layer of hair, so you’ll still need to use a good conditioner to smooth the hair and make it easier to comb.

Is it a good value? Well, that’s another question. Any other coconut oil based product should do about the same job and should be much cheaper. Off hand we can’t recommend any specific brands, but look for products that feature coconut oil as the first ingredient. (If anyone has any recommendations we’d be glad to review them. Just let us know.)

Is there anything to their rain forest hype? Well, their rain forest story seems well intentioned but this ingredient isn’t proven to work any better or any differently than non-rain forest ingredients. Coconut trees only grow in tropical climates, but there’s nothing special about trees from the rain forest. So, if you like Ojon’s products and you want to support their cause AND you can afford the $55 for this product, then by all means buy it. But don’t buy the product just because they tell you their rain forest extract is better.

The Beauty Brains Bottom Line:

We haven’t tested this product but based on recent scientific research, the palm oil used by Ojon should penetrate the hair. Therefore it could protect your hair from over-washing. However, at $55, it’s a bit pricey so shop around for other coconut oil products because you may be able to get the same effect for less money.

i thought id add that it is not palm oil but palm NUT oil which is the main ingredient; there’s a huge difference between the two; one is made from the pulp of palm fruit while the other is harvested from roasting palm nuts

thebeautybrains March 10, 2007 at 9:35 am

Thanks for the clarification. The fatty acid distribution of oil obtained from palm nuts is very similar to coconut oil and can be used in place of it with virtually no difference in chemistry.

meriellyn April 25, 2007 at 8:24 am

Instead of looking for expensive coconut oil based products, I just go ahead and use pure unrefined coconut oil. It’s a much cheaper alternative and works well. Plus you know exactly what’s in it.

Marie Moneysmith May 2, 2007 at 12:55 pm

I’ve been using coconut oil straight out of the container on my hair and find it works better than 99% of the other hair care products I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot!). Unrefined, organic coconut oil is very inexpensive, too — about $10 for a pound or so — and it works great as a skin moisturizer, too. Plus, it smells like a day at the beach — very light coconut-y scent that fades fairly quickly, but the moisturizing on hair and skin seem to last. Highly recommended!

Curlytwirly June 6, 2007 at 12:04 am

I want to try coconut oil as a conditioner, but I’m not sure how people go about using it. Should I use it before or after I shampoo? How long should I leave it on for? Is this a replacement for a daily conditioner, or more of a once-a-week thing?

Nel June 23, 2007 at 10:42 am

I am an African American woman with fine, soft hair texture. I’m currently using Ojon’s hair products and wanted to know if using pure unrefined coconut oil will work for my hair type as well? Ojon’s products are fantastic but I want to use natural products myself and save alot too.

MELISSA June 30, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Loreal Nutrigloss conditioner for hair that is curly or wavy lists palm oil. Redken fresh curls have coconut oil and suave healthy curls has coconut oil, are they any good?

Renee July 18, 2007 at 5:07 pm

I have been using Ojon products for about a year now. I love the products, but the prices are a bit ridiculous. I was happy to read about the coconut oil~I may have to give that a try before I order anymore Ojon products.

Lisa July 24, 2007 at 6:09 am

I’ve been using the products with much sucess. I don’t find them any more costly than any other good hair products out there ? if you know of anything better let me know

Suzy August 8, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Had such high hopes and spent so much money. I much prefer Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat. Rinsed all that sticky, smelly, Ojon out of my hair and put on the Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat. Ojon STINKS!

Camille September 6, 2007 at 12:12 am

I purchased the Ojon line and used it for 3 months. I was so disappointed, I am African Amrican with medium curly hair. The Restorative treatment only sat on my hair didn’t do anything for it. I much prefer Mizani’s products and will continue to stick with it, for my hair, it’s the only brand that wrks as described.

Renee September 11, 2007 at 8:38 pm

I’ve been using Ojon products for over a year now. I could not ever live without the restorative treatment. It has made the biggest difference in my hair. I’m not sure I’d give it up for any amount of coconut oil. To me, it’s worth every penny.

Marjani September 12, 2007 at 4:55 am

Hi I have just discovered this website and it is so interesting.
After lots of experimentation, I have settled on pure coconut oil with a couple of drops of almond oil (ancient Indian suggestion) for my hair. I warm it up in a water bath and apply to my hair for at least half an hour (sometimes overnight). Then wash and condition it. It makes my fine, dry, cranky hair full and soft but I use herbal essenses conditioner to get the shine as well. My hair seems soo much healthier now. I use it once a week btw

Jolene October 4, 2007 at 1:10 pm

I am an Ojon user… It is absolutely amazing stuff and worth every penny!
I use the treatment every 3 weeks or so and after a color

I use the shampoo and conditioner and revitalizing spray on a daily babsis.
As well as the glossing mist, Volumizing foam every day!

My only tip is to buy from QVC it is wayyyyy cheaper!!!!

michelle October 16, 2007 at 2:06 pm

I would so reccomend ojon to anyone who is dubious out there. i was very sceptical when i bought it but was amazed by how much shinier and healthy my hair became after just a days. my hairdresser has even noticed a difference. now as for the cost.. i know it is prob more costly than most BUT it lasts forever, i put this down to quality and also down to the fact of as you notice your hair becoming healthier you actually use less. i have the restorative treatment and shampoo/conditioner.Plus if you buy from qvc and don’t like it, send it back!!!

Annelise November 7, 2007 at 9:25 pm

I had a horrifing experience when a hairdresser left bleach on my hair for hours, she didn’t know what she was doing and the next day I had a head of straw, that was breaking off excessivly. I went to Ulta and they set me up with a hole bunch of Ojon products, I spent over $200 on them but within days of using my hair was softer, it stopped breaking it didn’t feel like straw anymore, one of the things I got was the ultra hydating shampoo the big 33 oz size, that was about 9 months ago and I just went online tonight to buy more, yes it lasted that long, all I needed was 1-2 pumps each time I washed my hair, it lathered up very easily. I have very long thick hair, AND I always have had to use conditioner, my whole likfe or I couldn’t get a comb through it, now The ultra hydrating shampoo is all I use in the shower, NO CONDITIONER! My hair is so soft and I can comb right through it! I do use a spray on conditioner afterwards about once a week before I blow dry. I have NEVER been so happy with my hair! EVER!! My near heatstopping experince led me to the OJON products, and for that I am so thankful! I will never use anything else in my hair, it is worth every penny! I never write about stuff online but I am so excited and happy I just had to tell other women how wonderful these products are!!

Mary November 23, 2007 at 11:44 pm

I just used the Ojon product this mornng and suffered a huge allergic reaction. When researching the chemical ingredients, two are listed as to be avoided by people who have perfume allergies. BEWARE! One of them, citronoll, is a pesticide. I will never use any product in this line again and I urge others to NOT wear products like this.

JENNA November 24, 2007 at 1:10 pm

THE BEST TREATMENT EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER, MAKKKES MY HAIR SOOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOFT i use it twice a week, and the WHOLE OJON LINE !!!

GOD SEND !!

Vickie December 25, 2007 at 5:50 am

I went to Sephora to get more of my carols daughter products and saw the ojon products by the register. I asked the cashier about it and she gave me a free sample of the restorative hair treatment. I am an african american woman with something like curly hair. I always have the frizzies. I used my sample and I couldn’t believe my eyes. My hair was beautiful. The curls no longer looked frizzy. It also made my hair very soft. My wash and go was perfect. I didn’t need to put anymore products on my hair. The down side is that I want more but I can’t afford it. I have to save just to be able to make a purchase. Oh yeah I do use unrefined coconut oil on my hair and I alsO take it. I put it in all my other hair products to. It’s good but not as good as Ojoin. Even when I purchase Ojon I will stil use my coconut oil.

Sasha January 23, 2008 at 2:49 am

I just use plain coconut oil, which silkens and softens hair like no other, and it’s very economical too! I find it quite amusing how people can justify spending truckload of money on exorbitant products like Ojon. :-P

Sasha January 23, 2008 at 3:00 am

Oh by the way, this is how you use it.

1. Overnight deep condition with coconut oil by slathering it on hair length. Then wear a shower cap to sleep.

2. Wash you hair the next day.

3. Lightly condition your washed and dried hair with coconut oil by smoothing whatever amount of oil you feel comfortable to your hair length. Coconut oil gets rid of frizz and softens hair splendidly. I was hooked after my 1st try.

Again, ha ha ha ha to those who spend a lot on hair care. :-)

Marimar February 2, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Does anyone know if Ojon is made specifically for ethnic hair?

Luann February 9, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Ojon is NOT made specifically for ethnic hair. As a matter of fact, it is shown on QVC with those who have your typical straight, limp hair.

Cat April 4, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I was eying ojon, but after researching it, it seemed like the thing to do was buy palm kernel oil- I don’t get the (added) fragrance, but my hair feels great. I bought organic palm kernel oil (along with extra virgin coconut oil and regular palm oil to test as well) from wilderness family naturals. Their sample size (2 oz) costs $2.00. Quite a steal!

thischick April 13, 2008 at 2:14 pm

I heard all of the hype about Ojon for a while before deciding to purchase the smallest jar afterI got back my tax refund. It is absolutley amazing stuff. My hair was instantly softer, more managable, silkier and alot less breakage occured. I have the typical African American hair, and I highly recommend it. My mother (who is a natural foods person) had been using pure coconut oil for years and when I used the Ojon on her hair, it worked ALOT better than just the coconut oil.

Danny April 25, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I’ve been using virgin coconut oil for the past 6 months now. I use it as internal food consumption and for external usage as well. I’ve tried other brands, but recently the one i’m using now is called Bencoolen. Not only do they sell Virgin Coconut Oil, they are selling many personal care products ranging from shampoo, facial skin care to body lotion with Virgin Coconut Oil as their main ingredient. I found that their hair shampoo, conditioner, and the therapy leave-on conditioner are very good. Do give it a try and visit http://www.bencoolen.com.my to see their range of products.

boo May 9, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Since this topic just got a recent bump, I thought I would mention that I have been using a homemade mixture of 3 parts coconut oil to one part olive oil (EVOO) on my hair for a couple of months and while my hair is indeed very soft and shiny, I have also noticed a possible side bonus. My hair is very fine, and it has been thinning badly for several years. I tried using Rogaine, but it made my scalp angry and I am not a particularly vain person so I just decided that I would live with my ears sticking out through my hair and with the occasional bare patch. Still, it was disheartening to have big clumps of hair fall out while I showered. However, I have noticed lately that I am only losing a few hairs now in the shower. It doesn?t seem to be getting any less thin, but it doesn?t seem to be getting more thin, either. I am not quite sure why this would be affected by the coconut oil (the hair falls out by the root, so it is not a matter of stronger hair being less likely to break off) Anyway, whether it is at all related to the oil or not, I just thought I would mention it as interesting. (BTW, I add the olive oil to the coconut b/c it may help absorption and also because it helps keep the coconut oil liquid)

Ojon Sucks May 29, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Ojon is like grease, it clumps your hair together in a weird way. It is all hype, all BS. This product will do to your hair what grease does to your hair.

Shawn June 3, 2008 at 6:36 pm

I use pure virgin organic coconut oil (About $15 for a 32 oz jar) mixed with my regular conditioner about once a week. It makes quite a difference – my hair is very fine and color treated too and dries out easily. The coconut oil (which I used on my skin too especially after sun exposure) is very softening.

I don’t think you need to spend big bucks on name brand products to get good results.

OjOn user June 19, 2008 at 11:27 am

If you are able to purchase the products that are fitting to your hair type, go for it. I tried the natural products and it had no affect on my coarse black hair. It did not feel to soft or to rough. But when I purchased the ojon restorative, it made my hair super soft, shiny and I only used less than a dime size and it did not make my hair greasy at all. I found myself having to get my ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks becasue my ends were so rough and riggid. But the ojon restorative made a difference with the hour I used it and my ends were smooth and I did not have to go back to et my ends trimmed sooner and my hair is growing at a great pace and it is much healthier. I purchased my products on ebay. Olive oil, and the products mentioned did not work immediately, if at all and I still had hair breakage problems and it did not penetrate to soften my hair like ojon did on my hair and I say, whatever is best for you financially go for it, everyone’s hair and finances are different. You do you and you will be happier for it. Ojon is great for me and the other products may be better for others.

Keira Magruder June 19, 2008 at 7:35 pm

You say to use a good conditioner. Which products do you consider to be good conditioners???

Kiky June 25, 2008 at 8:26 pm

I recently bought a less expensive brand of coconut oil conditioner (can’t recall the name right now, possibly Helene Curtis)) and slathered it on my hair generously in the shower after shampooing. It basically turned into glue and I cannot wash it out, no matter how many times I try. I’ve even used Dawn dishwashing liquid to try to break it up, but with no success. it is VERY SLOWLY coming out, but not quick enough. My hair is hard/stiff and clumps together- not silky at all. I can only (with difficulty) comb/brush it when it’s wet. i’m pretty sure it’s causing me to lose more hair that normal too. I am SO mad about this. Why is it not washing out? Anyone know a way to get it out that won’t hurt my hair ???

Whitney July 5, 2008 at 11:52 am

If Beauty Brains hasn’t used the product, why are they reviewing it? This post is basically speculation…

Especial July 5, 2008 at 6:58 pm

I am the CEO of Las Culturas and the ebay store currently has Batana (Ojon) products that are made in Honduras which is the source of the highly sought after precious oil. Coconut oil is a very sought oil in as well but Ojon is concentrated making it more effective. It takes about 2000 palm nuts to make a gerber jar of oil. Once the mainstream gets it in the pretty little bottle here in the US…well I dont know about its potentcy. I can say that I trust in the brand made in Honduras by Helix’e called Batana. It’s ojon oil products that arent for sale in the US and aren’t shipped many places before you can buy them on the shelves. Visit the store and try it out you’ll be surprised at the difference.

Especial July 5, 2008 at 7:01 pm

http://stores.ebay.com/Las-Culturas. Take a look and compare. You can get the same quality for half the price. All compareable items sold domestically retail for $55.00 or more.

dawnb3 August 3, 2008 at 12:40 pm

I just used the Ojon restorative conditioner. I got a free sample from Sephora. It smells awful! I washed it twice and I can still smell it. I have straight hair and my hair seems limper and more weighed down. Even if it works, it smells too bad to actually use on a regular basis.

Kate August 7, 2008 at 1:23 pm

The Ojon Restorative Treatment is AMAZING!! Not only does it strengthen my hair, but it does wonders for my fingernails, when I massage into my hair and scalp! I love, love, love this product. The key is to use just a bit and warm up in your palm before applying to hair. I’m a fan forever!!!!

Bert August 12, 2008 at 12:09 pm

To Mary citronoll, I think is citronella which is a natural ingredient that repells insects. You might just want to check that out.

kamryn August 16, 2008 at 4:46 pm

OJON is incredible ! ! !

I have been bleaching, blow drying and flat ironing for years which destroys my already dry hair. I tried a sample of the Ojon restorative treatment. I was concerned that the sample wouldn’t be enough for my long, thick hair, but did what i could to spread it evenly and left it in for around 20-30 minutes.

It doesn’t look too pretty and it does have a strong odor- sort of like chocolate, coffee, patchoulie and sandlewood – but once I felt my hair after blowing it dry and ironing it- I couldn’t believe it. It was as if I had the unblemished hair of my childhood back.

I don’t know if i can afford to purchase it, but it honestly did not take much to be more highly effective than I’ve ever had a product be – more than Matrix, Paul Mitchell or Aveda.

I WANT MORE ! ! !

Tina August 27, 2008 at 10:28 am

I recently purchased a few products from the Ojon line, and I must say I am impressed. I have naturally curly hair that I often straighten with the chi. I have recently noticed a substantial amount of breakage that I didn’t have before. Im not sure if its because Im getting older but my hair isn’t as healthy as it used to be. Im only 26, and it seems like with in a year my hair has changed dramatically. The first use of the Ojon proucts restored my hair instantly. I will not use any other product on my hair ever again.

Debra September 24, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I am a black female and used the Ojon Restorative Treatment. It has really made a difference in the smoothness of my hair. People complimentme all of the time on how shiney my hair is. I experience little to no breakage. I’ll try the coconut oil and see how that works just for comparison. Great products. Smells like coffee, cigarettes and chocolate!! But for healthier hair, I can ignore the odor. I use it with a heat cap, 15 to 20 minutes.

Nunu October 11, 2008 at 1:36 pm

I don’t know how i feel about the ojon products. If you’d asked me before today I would be their greatest cheerleader…but…

I received an assortment of their stuff for my birthday in September (2008). Today is October 11, 2008. I found maggots all over the giant cocao ball. I didn’t keep it in the shower. I kept it in the bowl provided, on the strainer provided, and I kept it on my bathroom sink.

I suppose it’s uber natural, but it supports life. It’s coming from another continent and I was too scared to smash it open to see what was in the middle of it. I got my sister a refund because she spent a lot of money on the stuff, but now I’m scared to use ANY of this stuff.

It’s a huge risk. This stuff isn’t cheap.

I can’t find if anyone else has found anything like this, but I did see where chocolate bars have been found with maggots in them.

Anonymous October 23, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Everyone is different. For some people, coconut oil may work, for others Ojon may work and so forth. I have tried coconut oil before and I didn’t like the smell or the grease it left in my hair. I have been using Ojon Restorative Treatment for 2 months now…and I love it. The only downside is that it is expensive. You just have to try what’s out there and hope you find what’s best for you.

Allison October 27, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I have been using Ojon Treatment off and on for over a year, and it has not made a significant difference in the health of my hair. I have only bought one jar and will not buy it again, mainly because of the funky scent. My husband can’t stand it and calls it my “old man conditioner!” I will buy coconut oil, thanks to reading these reviews! Also, I love Aphogee’s Essential Oils for Hair, which is available at Sally’s and costs around $6.50. So far it has moisturized my hair far better than the pricier ojon Treatment without the nasty smell!

Val M in Copperas Cove, TX November 10, 2008 at 3:24 am

All, I used Ojon sparingly, and I loved the effect it had on my hair. However, I stopped using it because it had such a horrible smell. Before you spend any more money on it, please read Krissy AM’s review about the product (palm oil vs palm nut oil, etc.) and the ingredients:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/63012/product_review_ojon_restorative_hair.html?page=2&cat=5

tee December 1, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Made my hair shiny and softer…..If you have dead ends you just have to cut them…..nothing will “cure” that….my hair has more bounce and appears healthier overall. Of course every person’s hair is different and not every product works for everyone…I personally think the scent is kind of exotic…..reminds me of incense…..once you shampoo it out it really isn’t very noticable. If you can afford it I would recommend you give it a try…..I flat iron my hair frequently and using this product brings life back into my hair….

CutiePie January 4, 2009 at 7:28 pm

I tried Ojon Restorative treatment on 2 separate occassions. Approximately 3 years ago I tried it the first time. Initially it seemed to work. My shoulder length relaxed hair was so glossy, smooth and soft. However, the product did weigh my hair down and it only seemed to work if my hair was in really bad shape. If my hair so decent, the product had no effect. I tried it again last month and it made my hair brittle but gave me shine. In my experience, 99% of Ojon products don’t work for me. THe only product to date that does is Tawaka hair conditioner. I absolutely love it! It instantly detangles my hair and makes it smooth, soft and shiny. I’ve been using this conditioner for around a month and have been getting consistent results!

Tried Everything January 8, 2009 at 10:06 pm

I’ve tried the Ojon restorative treatment and virgin coconut oil after reading about it here and unfortunately the Ojon worked better.

One question: Is it necessary to apply the treatment to dry hair? My hair is easier to comb when it’s wet, but I was concerned that the product would not be absorbed. I’ve scoured the web for an answer to this and haven’t been able to come up with one.

janice January 11, 2009 at 4:49 pm

i purchased the product and loved the silky feeling however after a few uses my hair started to fall out! Now my hair is thin up top and on the right side! Dismayed I check forums and yes this was a common occurance after using this product. Not a happy camper after the expense of purchasing this product!!!

joann young February 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm

If you want the effect of Ojon Restorative product without the cost try Swanson Vitamins natural Red Palm Oil. I think it is the base for the costlier product. It also has almost no smell and it costs under $5 for a lb. I have used both and prefer the Red Palm Oil…even with shipping that is about 62 cents an oz. Other food sources may have red palm oil, it looks the same, works the same and is easier to rinse out while still being effective.
