Love the blog and all the fascinating information on it. I’m becoming a much more informed and beautiful consumer thanks to your research in answer to questions from people like me! My question is whether the salicylic acid in Neutrogena’s moisturizer for sensitive and acne-prone skin has any significant impact on the Clindoxyl and/or Differin topicals that I’ve been prescribed to put on my face in the morning and at night, respectively.

I am in my early 30s and have tried everything to rid my face from the persistent torment of acne for years and years…. These two topicals are helping me keep it under control but I’m worried that my choice of moisturizer is working against them.

The Right Brain Clears Up Her Acne (Question)

Bad AcneAccording to the Journal of the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology Clindoxyl … is a suitable alternative for patients who are currently using topical antibacterials either alone or in conjunction with other topical anti-acne agents or systemic antibacterials. So it looks like it’s ok to use Sal Acid moisturizers with this product.

Differin is a different story, however. According to the FDA Moisturizers may be used if necessary; however, products containing alpha hydroxy or glycolic acids should be avoided.

So there you have it. If you’re using Differin you’d better stay away from Sal Acid!

But I thought Salicylic acid was a BHA and so it shouldn’t matter.

Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids pretty much work the same way.

I actually read as part of a social networking site that I am apart of, http://www.medsocial.com that a lot of people have had a lot of good results with their acne by drinking a lot of water, which was smoething that I never heard of. They have it is because water helps your skin.

  4. Left Brain Says:

John, thanks for the comment. We’ll have to look into that medsocial site. However, just because people say it on the Internet doesn’t make it true. There is no valid scientific study or reason that drinking lots of water will have any effect on acne. Drinking lots of water is good but don’t do it to help your skin. It won’t help.

  5. Jen Says:

actually drinking lots of water does help the skin. your body is able to flush out lots of toxins and bacteria using the water that you drink, including the bacteria that causes acne. Drinking water also helps with cellulite for the same reasons.

  6. Left Brain Says:

I’ve not seen any scientific data to support drinking extra water as a way to help skin. And if your kidneys & bladder are working the way they are supposed to, excess water will be processed and removed through urine, not your skin.
