Rachel says she found us thru Beauty Addict and she wants to know if skin tightening lotions really work. Specifically, she wants to know if the super-expensive products from Dr. Brandt and Dr. Perricone are just a huge waste of money again. The Left Brain speaks:
Skin tightening lotions are a scam. The best performance you can expect from this kind of product is a temporary tightening feel if the product contains film forming agents. And even this marginal effect is not very long lasting.
You specifically asked about Dr. Brandt`s products. Our favorite quote about this product comes from the Cosmetic Cop who says…
Dr. Brandt`s Crease Release ($150 for 1 ounce) contains gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an amino acid that acts as a neurotransmitter inhibitor to relax facial muscles. However, there is absolutely no research showing this to be the case. In fact, if this product did work as it states, the face and neck muscles would become relaxed, causing increased sagging.
The only skin tightening techniques that REALLY work are done by dermatologists. The latest methods for improving firmness and texture use lasers, radio waves, and injectable fillers. They’re expensive but they really do work. You can read about them at The Academy Of American Dermatologists.
The Brains Bottom Line: Don’t waste your money on expensive tightening lotions. Splurge on a good facial sunscreen instead!
Now the vitamins, herbal tonics and nutritional supplements can be taken from the vitamin shop. So you don’t need to wander around diet clinics and physicians in order to collect your diet plan full of mineral, vitamins, and magnesium. You can cure you skin tightening by taking organic liquid vitamins on discount prices from a vitamin shop.

Talking of skin… in the Feb. 22 issue of Nature the whole Insight section is on skin! They have 6 reviews and a Johnson &Johnson paper-y looking segment. However, it is stated that no one from the Nature editorial team reviewed it. The pics from their clinical trials look promising, but then again, this lack of review makes my skin crawl. Can the awesome Beauty Brains check it out?
Still on the subject of tightening, can you talk about lotions with minerals, like the Neutrogena Visibly Firm that contains copper? Do the trace amounts of minerals do anything? I’m inclined to say no, but I’d like to hear what you Brains have to say.
This is not to say that all creams are scams! Check out the April 2007 Allure magazine article on how to look younger. Turns out the beauty expert uses Relastin Eye Silk!
This is to say they are all scams. At least in the sense they we described above. Relastin may be a perfectly fine product that the Allure beauty expert uses, but it isn’t any better for your skin than other tightening creams. And at $69 for half an ounce, they should be ashamed of themselves!
Yeah, what about the copper in Neutrogena visibly firm? It feels great…but is it effective at all?
ACTUALLY – they are not all scams.
I went to a products tradefair thing in bologna in Italy couple of years ago, and got samples of this skin tightening product, which i have never seen on the market but it was AMAZING.
it was like a clear serum…and it would last until i washed it off..and it smoothed out all my wrinkles..and just gave me a shiney skin..like as if my hands were pulling back my face like when you have a tight pony tail…
also makeup just glided on!
was amazing!!
so they are NOT all scams..there is something out there that REALLY works..
I disagree. I’ve used a wonderful product that definitely tightens skin. The ingredient that tightens is DMAE. The company is Ageless Skincare, out of California. It was $30 for a jar that lasted me 2mos. The only thing I didn’t like is that it has alcohol, which is drying. It needed to be abit more moist, to be a good moisturizer. But one could use something else with it, like DermaE, which is moist without being greasy. So far this is the very best dmae cream I’ve used that isn’t expensive. I have not used anything else that tightens like dmae. Not all products with dmae tighten as well as this one because they don’t seem to have much dmae in them. I’ve used 3 totally and the last two don’t show any tightening. But you can believe that if you use this product you will look like you’ve had a facelift, after about 7days. My roommate saw me after being away and she couldn’t believe how my skin looked and I’m almost 60yrs. It works and I don’t work for the company. It’s just good. I’m still looking for something that works as well because I don’t like to wait on an order. But I may order this again online.
