Hair Removal Laser Treatment Works Better as a Single

by Mid Brain on October 17, 2009 · 20 comments

Mid Brain reports:

It turns out, more is not always better, at least not when it comes to laser hair removal.

In an article published in the Archives of Dermatology, scientists report that a treatment with a single type of laser was more effective than one with two kinds of lasers.  Twenty individuals were treated in various spots with a Nd:YAG laser, an alexandrite laser, or a combination of those.  They found that the most effective, least painful treatment was the alexandrite laser.  It had an 84.3% reduction in hair versus a 73.6% reduction of the combined laser.  The combination treatment also caused more burning (an unfortunate side effect of this procedure).

Does laser hair removal work?

According to this research, laser hair removal does work. It is believed to work by destroying the hair follicles. The other finding was that this treatment lasts.   After an 18-month follow-up, the hair removal treatment was still effective.  So, if you can get past the pain of the procedure, it does work.  And it’s certainly longer lasting than both shaving or waxing.

Have you had a hair removal laser treatment?  Did it work for you?  Leave a comment and let the rest of the Beauty Brains community know.

It was okay for me. Been doing it for a couple of years. The annoying thing however is that if you do it in one area, it kind of stimulates hair growth in another which is very annoying, so dont get shocked if you start growing hair in areas you didn’t previously have. Some doctors deny this while others admit it.

I had it on my chin and I still have one treatment left, but I have noticed a huge difference in quantity/color.
I couldn’t be happier with it and would recommend it to anyone – it’s been a huge boost for my self-confidence as I was always self-concious about what people could see.

I’m noticing a slow difference. I’m on my 12th treatment and my chin has enough that I have to shave every couple of days.

Laser hair removal works. What also can work for you is IPL hair removal which is not a laser.

I would suggest laser hair removal to be the best treatment to have for removing hair. This would offer a an effective and lesser pain procedure.

I had it done on my chin, upper lip, and the tops of my feet. My feet was the ONLY place it worked! My chin still needs daily tweezing plus digging ingrown hairs out with pins. My upper lip still needs once a week waxing and tweezing every couple of days. My big toes still need to be shaved but rest of my feet are mostly hairless except for one hair on each foot.

It’s worthless IMHO. I wish I could just have them removed the way you can have excessive sweat glands removed.

Had six treatments on my underarms. It was a complete waste of my time and money. Decided to try electrolysis. Haven’t shaved in two years. It’s painful but utterly effective.

According to a number of research papers Laser hair removal is only marginally more effective than IPL hair removal (approximately 10-20% more) which is kind of negligible, considering that laser hurts more, takes longer per session and may cause more side effects.

One of the possible reasons for the nd:Yag + alexandrite combination not working as well as alexandrite on its own lays within the wavelength. Alexandrite’s wavelength of light would have been more effective for dark hair/light skin conbination than nd:Yag’s. Nd:Yag is probably one of the most painful out of most lasers because it has a very high absorption into water (meaning skin), over melanin (meaning hair follicle). I hope this makes sense.

IPL technology is very versatile and has less incidents of side effects this is why a lot of therapists chose it over lasers, even though they are so much more expensive to run.
