For Straight Hair Just Swallow A Pill?

by Mid Brain on January 12, 2010 · 16 comments

If Naturallycurly.com is correct, our post on 7 Sure Ways To Straighten Your Hair may soon be obsolete: that’s because scientists in Australia have discovered the gene that’s responsible for creating curly hair and they’re developing a treatment that couldĀ  allow you to change your curly hair to straight just by swallowing a pill.

In an intriguing side note, this discovery may also let you predict whether your baby will have straight or curly hair.

If you could predict your baby’s hair type, would you? Leave a comment for the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

No, I wouldn’t if it was only my genes that went in to the baby, I have straight hair and I’m happy with it. If the guy had really messy curly hair I might think otherwise, especially since a friend of mine who’s in that situation. She’s got straight and sleek hair, the father of her child however has the worst frizzy curls ever… and so does their daughter who detests hair brushes since her tangly curls hurt to comb out.
But then again, there are good shampoos and conditioners for curly hair out there! :)

I’d rather swallow a pill that made my hair curly then straight. Straight hair always looks so greasy and nasty even when freshly washed. Curly always looks clean and nice. Plus women just look better with curls.

It sounds like that girl’s hair just shouldn’t be brushed out or treated like straight hair. If you trat curly hair as if it’s defective straight hair, you destroy it — and then people wonder why it looks frizzy …

it sounds superficial, but i think i would predict my child’s hair type if i could… I have very thick wavy hair, and my boyfriend has thick curly hair… gotta get ready for my Chaka Khan baby in the future.. lol (kidding!)

I personally wish I had curly or wavy hair…

I go curly about 50% of the time. My hair is somewhere around Bernadette Peters/Felicity. I appreciate my curls now, usually.

Is it so wrong that my heart leapt when I read this post?

I can’t believe this can be true. Is there any proof?

25 years of thick, curly, fluffy hair always makes me wonder why straight haired people want the kind of hair that I have. I get half my hair chopped out when I get it thinned and it’s still thick and fluffy. But getting back to the question asked in the post: I wouldn’t want to predict my baby’s hair type. I’m fairly certain my kids will have my hair. But at least I can teach them how to make the best of it.

The idea of taking a pill to change one’s hair seems a bit… 5th Element. Would it change the genetic makeup, or just the shape of the follicle? Hmm… think I’ll stick to the straightening iron on occasion and living with the persian cat on my head.

I’m sort of mystified why anyone would want flat hair on purpose.

They’ll all take the flat hair pill … and then they’ll all be running to the salon store to buy volumizing shampoo to undo what they just took the pill to get. :-)

Does this product really work? I am mixed and have curly hair. people always tell me that they love my hair and to stop flat ironing it. So if this pill works i would buy it so i wouldnt have to damage my hair anymore. :) I hate when my hair is straight and then the rain or any water on my hair turns it curly after i ironed it. I would love if my kids had straight hair……..when i do have kids

I would definitely be interested in this product. I hope they get a manufacturer and get it on the market in the US soon (and what a hot stock that company would be). In the linked article on naturallycurly.com, the researchers say they want to develop pills to make curly hair straight, and also ones to make straight hair curly. What I am wondering is if the treatment would be reversible. If the pill would turn off the curly hair gene, would the gene turn on again when you stop taking it? Or would you turn on the curly gene by taking another pill?

Right now, straight hair is the trend, but the pendulum will swing back to curly hair being preferred, as it has been in the past (as in the 1980s).

Hasn’t this story been “breaking news” for YEARS? BB, you yourselves have reported potential “straight-hair” pills before. It’s fine if you want to generate some traffic as this sort of story is very popular, but come on. You started this blog to serve your readers. Stop manipulating them.

I would consider it. If it is harmless, I would love my kids not having the same problem I had with my hair… just too much work.

Shut up maggie the makeup addict you nasty bitch

I cannot wait for this pill. I have always wanted bone straight hair. The fact this will be attainable is surreal.
