Do natural remedies, like putting sliced cucumbers over your eyes to get rid of puffiness, really work?
According to ScientificAmerican.com some natural concoctions really do work while others are not only unsuccessful, but actually potentially harmful. Exercise is one definite natural cure, as is sleep and eating veggies to get vitamins. But there are some less likely ones – lemons, for example, are filled with acids that help with wrinkles and acne. Also, eating foods rich in oil (omega-3) will help your skin. Those old wives’ tales you’ve heard about teabags and cucumbers? Those really are true. Also, anti-oxidants, meaning lots and fruits and vegetables, help with your breakouts.
On the other hand, those all-natural berry blends you read about? They won’t do a thing. In addition, smoking and eating lots of sugar are sure ways to ruin your skin. You may have heard that water will change your skin for the best, and that drinking eight glasses a day will keep the doctor away, but it doesn’t hydrate skin very well. That’s about the moisture level in your epidermis, and the ability it has to retain that moisture.
Don’t be completely cynical, but don’t be completely trusting, either. Once you finish reading this article, sure – head into your backyard, settle those cucumbers over your eyes, and know that they’re working. (At least according to Scientific American.)

I’ve always wondered about honey as well as garlic, which are supposed to be good for acne. I’ve tried some face masks with both of these which seemed to help…but I wonder if there was actual a study done on it.
I’ve noticed it’s true about the vegetables and omegas helping acne. That second one came as a surprise, but I’ve been telling my teenagers for years it isn’t always what you eat as it is what you’re not eating.
The Lemons for wrinkles is intriguing. I’ll have to try that out and see if I can get some anecdotal evidence on it too.
I’ve heard of lemons for removing dead skin on the knees, feet, and elbows, not for wrinkles. I even remember there was some pedicure place in New York that was offering orange juice and lime juice pedicures because they said it made the feet softer.
lemons have citric acid, considered one of the alpha hydroxy acids, so guess it does a mild peel
Yup, I agree. It’s about good habits – eating fresh whole food, sleeping well, & working out. No amount of fancy superfoods or powerpacked antioxidants will make a difference if you have a bad lifestyle.
Yes, a healthy lifestyle is a geat baseline for a beautiful skin, but antioxidants in a skin care product have been shown to reverse UV damage to skin DNA. One way you can get their benefits is to make a toner from from a 500mg vitamin C tablet and a tablespoon of cold water. I used this during the summer when I got too much sun and I described how to make it in my No-Nonsense beauty blog.
I personally haven’t tried lemons, but I have tried eating avocados regularly (full of the fatty acids mentioned here) and I definitely noticed a much more supple and smoother complexion.
Melanie, I use honey as a face wash. I wet my hands and use it just like soap, and I swear to you my face has never been more consistantly clear.
It’s one of those things that it doesn’t hurt to try it, and you probably already have honey in your cupboard. I gave it about two weeks and sure enough, my skin feels awesome.
I do a honey mask once a week and it’s fabulous. I had hardened oil deposits on my forehead that were really bothering me. Doing this, combined with regular face washing, has made them all go away. My skin feels amazing after. Just spread the honey on and let it sit for awhile. I put a hot washcloth over my whole face for a bit (it feels so nice and because of the honey it smells delicious), then wipe it off. I love the results.
