The Story of Cosmetics, the Critique

You may have seen the Annie Leonard’s original video, the Story of Cosmetics, posted on our Twitter and Facebook feeds or in 1000 other places online. Sponsored by the Environmental Working Group, it is full of frightening misinformation regarding the dangers of cosmetic products.

Thankfully the good people at How the World Works have put together a critique of the video which includes references to peer-reviewed scientific journals to document the true facts about cosmetic safety. It’s a bit lengthy at a little more than 15 minutes but if you’re interested in the true story behind “dangerous” cosmetics it’s certainly worth your time.

They call groups like Ms. Leonard’s the lunatic fringe for a reason–fear mongering and alarmist drivel is what drives them rather than fact and reason.

Not fond of libertarianism, in fact I am a socialist with a sign in my yard supporting public healthcare but this is a damn good critique.

Isn’t it interesting that most critiques on this website are argued by men? When was the last time you knew a man to wear lipstick? That is my biggest, albeit not my only, issue with critiques such as these.

Hi “A woman.” Can you please clarify what you’re implying? Perry and I are men, that’s true. Are you suggesting that our gender means we can’t refute arguments about the safety of cosmetic product (which we have formulated) just because we don’t wear them on a regular basis? If you have other issues we’d love to hear about them. Thanks.
