MemberHi!
I am curious about the claims different self tanners make (“not streaky”, “not orange”, other differences in results/color). I understand that self tanners, usually DHA or DHA + Erythrulose have a reaction with amino acids in your upper layer of skin cells that causes a browning to occur. I also easily understand the concentration of the these actives would make the “tan” lighter or darker. My questions related to this are other than the concentrations of these active ingredients, do other non-actives in the formula play a role in the results, with respect to either the color or the streakyness? I can see how other ingredients might make the formula spread better, so less streaks, but color seems less predictable on different people, and just how much variation can you get from 1 or 2 actives that are used in every tanner? How much do non-active ingredients in self tanner contribute to the results as far as how “good” the tan is (natural looking, good color, etc.) ?Thanks!SaraApril 17, 2015 at 7:56 pm #94584RandyS
MemberI’ve never worked on these products myself but my understanding that the tanning effect is VERY dependent on the formula base, not just the active ingredients. That would explain the product to product variation you described.

MemberHi as we know self tanning is a cheap process but should be done under guidance, you should concern a dermotologist before doimng it, as everyone has different skin type.

MemberHey Emma. I don’t believe that derms actually deal much with self tanning. It’s considered to be a cosmetic process.
