So I have been doing a lot of research on products considered or marketed as “natural” and most proclaim to NOT use synthetic dyes. However, when I go into the Ingredients section of said products, I find things listed at the end such as Red 33, Blue 1 or FD&C Yellow No. 5, etc. I am confused, aren’t those considered synthetic dyes?! Thanks in advance!

They are about as Synthetic as it gets, which of course doesn’t make them entirely bad just not very natural

Kalo6: Do you have a link to any specific “natural” products that list FD&C dyes? Also, I’d love to feature your question on our podcast. Would you be interested in submitting an audio version? Hi Randy. I most recently saw an example of this on Sephora’s website for Bite Beauty Lipstick. http://www.sephora.com/luminous-creme-lipstick-P283903?skuId=1321363&icid2=Bite_LP_Bestsellers_Carousel_P283903_link

You can see the 4th description down under Formulated Without is “-Synthetic Dyes“. Then if you hop over to the Ingredients Tab, you will see this : FD&C Blue No. 1 (CI 42090), FD&C Yellow No. 5 (CI 19140), FD&C Yellow No. 6 (CI 15985), FD&C Red No. 40 (CI16035), Manganese Violet (CI 77742).

Maybe its an error on Sephora’s copy writer’s part, but its certainly misleading!! (However, when I went to Bite Beauty’s Blog they describe their line as “all-natural”….hmmmm)

Well it appears on their label, so not just a Sephora error

Hard to tell if it’s just ignorance, misinterpretation or an out and out attempt to mislead.

I wondered if this was some kind of mistake but seeing this ingredient list is the smoking gun, as far as I’m concerned.

Off course it’s misleading, that’s what they do. I work for Sephora and trust me Bite makes a LOT of money by pretending to be more natural than other brands. They know most people will blindly believe the box or the sales girl and will never read the ingredients (or even know how to) so they decide to make a calculated move.

Personally, I have almost no sympathy for the “naturals” people. They’re so blindly attached to their dogma of “chemicals are bad” that it’s their own fault when they get duped.
