I came across 2 salon-branded hair dyes, one of which is twice the price. The manufacturer seems to position one of them as super caring, much healthier and better option than the other (hence the price). As I know from your posts, we as consumers should pay attention on the top of the list. One of them is mostly stearic acid, bees was and mineral oil. The other is PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, polyquat and glyceryl stearate. So questions are:

    1) Which would you chose based on the info given? Is there any way to say that one will work better on hair in terms of depositing colour and still leaving hair well-conditioned? AND is worth the money?

    2) Does castor oil perform better on hair than mineral oil? Does it penetrate the hair shaft?

    3) What the hell is “PEG-40 hydrogenated” ? ))) How does it alter original castor oil properties? And which is better for the hair in this regard? You know, putting pure natural castor oil on hair is quite a popular thing in Europe…

    4) I don’t seem to trace any pigments in both products, which is strange to me. Aren’t they supposed to be mentioned as well, according to law regulations or whatever? As far as I know dye pigments can be quite toxic and can cause allergies. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

Sorry for the lengthy one, I just don’t know another source like yours to ask questions. You guys are always so helpful! Thanks a lot in advance!

    1. I’d choose the less expensive product. Neither of these are measurably “healthier” or “more gentle” for hair.

    2. I don’t know what you mean by “performs better”. I doubt you will notice much difference between castor oil and mineral oil in these formulas.

    3. PEG-40 is Polyethyleneglycol. It is a modification made to oils that makes them more compatible with water.

    4. Hair color is made using a polymerization reaction, not through standard dyes. So things like 4-AMINO-2-HYDROXYTOLUENE, 2-AMINO-3-HYDROXYPYRIDINE chemically react with the developer to produce a long chain polymer that creates the color.

    Hope that helps

Perry, thanks a lot for the answer!
About #4, a bit complicated for my understanding… Have you ever blogged about how hair dyes work in terms of chemistry? Or maybe there’s some good trustful resource on the subject that you could link to?

With my experience, you can do with Henna Dye.
    INSTRUCTIONS:

Place the henna in a ceramic or glass bowl. Stir the hot coffee into the henna powder with a plastic spoon until consistency is like cake batter and not crumbly.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit for 4-6 hours.
Apply the henna to hair and rub it into coat strands you want to color. Cover with a plastic cap and let it sit for 4-6 hours. Rinse the henna out with warm water or co-wash.
Immediately follow with a deep conditioning mask.
Henna is effective at coloring gray but will leave a reddish tone. If you want a black color, you’ll want to follow-up the henna with indigo.

I like Clairol Beautiful Collection dye. I use Darkest Brown and Medium Ash Brown. Using two shades makes it look more natural. Pros: gentle, makes my hair shinier and less frizzy, has a very natural-looking color, doesn’t lift color. No peroxide or ammonia, so it doesn’t damage my curly-frizzy hair. Easy to apply. Cons: looks good for only 2 weeks, then it fades. Strong perfume (but I say that about every hair dye, and many smell worse.) Can make your hair darker or a different shade, but not lighter.

Home hair colourants that contain ammonia often skimp on ingredients that protect your hair’s new colour and health, whereas with oil-based hair dyes such as Garnier Olia, not only is the loss of colour reduced, but natural nut and fruit oils nourish the hair, giving it a healthier shine.

Nice share. Thanks for sharing. Dyeing hair is an important way to show one’s taste of fashion. Changing the colors of your hair can also be a condiment of your fashion life. If you are satisfied with the current hair style, and you just want to dye a color, then it is not necessary to go to the barber shop. With a simple, easy-to-operate, and good quality hair dye products, you can dye at home by yourself. Hair dye products from Japan are diverse, but they all have some common features: easy to use, no pungent smell, and will not cause serious damage to hair. Many Japanese girls dyed their hair at home because it’s cheaper than in barbershops. Here A Little nice source for Coconut oil for Dye Hair: https://www.beautyepic.com/coconut-oil-for-dry-hair/

For me – castor oil performs better on hair than mineral oil. They are more gentle for my hair. It should be 100% Pure with NO additives or carriers added. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT! Be careful when buying. Personally using castor oil organic from this Carrier Oils
