Do Mineral Crystal Deodorants Really Work?

by Sarah Bellum on February 25, 2008

We thought you might be interested in this email exchange with one of our favorite fans, Wendy Wild, who does the weekend show on KTU radio from New York.

Wendy wonders: Hey, I haven’t contacted you in a while, so just wanted to see how you were. I really enjoy reading your site each day! Thanks for the great entries.

Here’s a product I recently bought that I’m absolutely baffled by. Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorant Stick. It’s one of those no-aluminum deodorants, however… It’s just a damn rock, lol. The weirdest thing is that it works (WELL). I still don’t understand how because it smells like nothing and looks (and feels) like a piece of plastic. However, it’ll magically keep you smelling like NOTHING for at least 24 hours. Any insight here?

Sarah Bellum replies:

Hi again Wendy, nice to hear from you. We’ve been busy here at the Beauty Brains, getting ready to publish our first book. Exciting, huh? mineral deodorant

To answer your question, the Beauty Brains have seen these mineral deodorants before. They do look like a hunk of plastic, or glass. That’s because they’re made from a mineral known as potassium alum, also known as potassium aluminum sulfate. Yeah, that’s right these mineral deodorants do contain aluminum! I always thought they were aluminum free. But unlike the aluminum salts used in antiperspirants, alum doesn’t stop you from sweating, it only helps control the growth of bacteria that makes your sweat stinky.

If you like the way these mineral crystals work for you, that’s great. But don’t fall for all the advertising claims made by some of the companies that sell this kind of product. For example, Crystal Body Deodorant claims that regular deodorants are made with highly toxic chemicals. (If that was true we’d all be dropping over dead!) Others claim that mineral deodorants are being better for you because they don’t block the release of toxins like other deodorants do.

While it’s true that antiperspirants do plug the opening of the sweat gland to reduce sweat, there is no data that proves deodorants (or more accurately, antiperspirants, are harmful because they block the release of toxins. Since your body doesn’t use sweat glands to rid itself of toxins, this really isn’t an issue. (This discussion reminds me of our post on Kinoki Detox foot pads. Hoo boy, what a controvery ol’ Lefty stirred up with THAT one!)

If you can want learn more, read our previous post on the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants.

I have used crystal deodorant in the past and it is effective in preventing odor. I use it when I’m wearing something sleeveless and don’t want white marks on my clothes. I just keep my arms up a lot so I don’t sweat on my clothes. If you aren’t wearing sleeveless, I wouldn’t use this deodorant because your underarms will be sweaty.

what a lot of rubbish that has said on this blog, recent scientific data proves that crystal deodorants not only out perform big brand chemical based deodorants, not only are they far safer read the true ingredients that are in there products on http://www.ewg.org

The PR companies working for the top 5 brands wish to tell dispel the advantages of crystal deodorants, the company selling the crystal deodorant in the above have based there pr on wild claims made by experts however the crystal deodorant works better than any commercial product on the market as seen and tested on Australian TV in the worlds best climate for proving a deodorant actually proving a product works.

get real !

clioparrot,

Do you have a resource that is run by scientists instead of the fearmongering lawyers at the Environmental Working Group. They publish non-scientific garbage. Where is your scientific proof that crystal deodorants work better?

I’m not talking about rubbish created by the marketing companies trying to sell the product, but peer-reviewed research in a legitimate scientific journal? Do you have anything?

nutritionini April 30, 2008 at 10:48 am

Many of the things you said may be correct, but who would want to put aluminum containing products on their skin with all the research available on aluminum? They are finding aluminum in the brain of individuals with Alzheimers disease and are also looking at possible links between aluminum and breast cancer. The absorption of aluminum is even greater when you shave prior to putting on an antiperspirant.

Responding to : “Crystal Body Deodorant claims that regular deodorants are made with highly toxic chemicals. (If that was true we’d all be dropping over dead!)” I disagree…..cigarettes have highly toxic chemicals in them that over time have an effect on the user. We release trace amounts of toxins through our sweat glands but i’m more concerned about the chemicals in the deodorant going directly into my lymph nodes!!! I think we should have more of an open mind rather than believe what we’re spoon feed by money hungry consumer companies and our own gov’t. Of course they’ll tell us there is no link to cancer because they know we’re more uncomfortable with the idea of walking around smelling like onions!!!

I’ve used crystal deodorant for about 3 years and love it. I had been getting an itchy/prickly heat type rash using regular top selling deodorants, and that’s no longer a problem. Also, I’ve been using the same crystal for 2 YEARS this month – will probably get another few weeks out of it!!! I can’t believe how long they last, so even though the price may be higher than most deodorants the value is way superior!

Veronica August 15, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I started using the Crystal Body Deodorant about two months ago, and it works pretty well. However, if you workout and sweat a lot, I wouldn’t use this product. I couldn’t believe how bad my t-shirts smelled after my workouts! I was so embarrassed! It’s just not strong enough for high impact workouts. I started using crystal body deodorant because I didn’t like the permanent stains on the arms of my shirts. Since I’ve been using this product, I haven’t had that issue. It’s a great product for everyday use. Just don’t use it for exercising

I’m curious about the disolving process. Spray are much more expensive then the original rock but more easy to use. I’d like to disolve the rock myself, know how long it takes and what’s the ratio (100 grams of rocks for one liter of water, for example).

Thanks for any help here! ;)

A response to a few statements made in orginal post.
Crystal deodorant, the natural alternative to mainstream deodorants has been used centuries in the Far and Middle East for its natural deodorising properties. The alum formed from non toxic minerals is used in the crystal deodorants are in the salt form, not the metallic form. The crystal is applied to wet skin where a thin film sits on the surface. The molecular structure is too big to pass into the body, this means the pores do not become blocked as with antiperspirant use, but rather allow the body’s natural process to occur simply but without the odour that’s associated.

Your lymph nodes do excrete toxins from your body!

Scaring people about aluminum in crystal deodorant is wrong…educating the public that there is a healthier alternative is the most important. Do you know that alum is in your drinking water and green leafy veggies??? Because alum is a compound found in nature we ingest between 20 to 60 milligrams of alum per day through the water we drink, the foods we eat and the air we breathe…Please research and educate yourself and others before making certain statements…TCCD.com

Left Brain December 1, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Please show us some research that isn’t just your personal opinion and that comes from a credible source (not a site trying to sell crystal deodorants).

Chris December 11, 2008 at 2:45 am

My Personal experience:
I first used crystal deoderants back in the eighties when I was a teenager. They worked! Worked well! Basically lived up to all the claims, and was even more effective than the chemical deodorants without the other issues. I find chemical deodorants do irritate my lymph nodes which causes occasional minor swelling and sensitivity, do stain my clothes etc. In fact it was my desire to re-introduce the crystal deodorants into my lifestyle that brought me to this site.

Why did I stop (early nineties)? At the time the product was only available as a smooth lump of crystal with nothing to grip it. When you wet it (which you must do to apply) it got as slippery as soap, if not worse. Inevitably one eventually dropped it which broke it into little shards. One would think you could still use these, but the edges were very sharp and cut the skin. so you wound up throwing most of it away.

So if they’ve addressed this issue, (imo putting it in a plastic push up tube would be best) I would go back to using this in a heartbeat.

Anti-perspirants seem to make zero impact to the level of perspiration I experience anyway and only make the discomfort factor worse.

Final point: If product A is 2% toxic and product B is 1% and all else is largely equal, I’ll use product B.

Chris December 11, 2008 at 2:52 am

BTW a suggestion for Veronica.

If the crystal is ineffective when working out, perhaps it would help to apply some directly to your clothes just before working out. Can’t hurt to try right?

Chris December 11, 2008 at 3:06 am

OK, with reference to my earlier comment, maybe it’s actually the sweat glands, not the lymph nodes that are getting irritated by the chemical deodorants.

Ally December 16, 2008 at 9:23 am

In response to the thread title:
I used the standard Secret deodorant my mom raised me on for a long time and although it smelled nice in the morning, the B.O. always overpowered it by lunch. After college, I was wasting a lot of time in CVS and happened upon Certain-Dri, a strong version of regular deodorant, before the clinical strength revolution. It worked great for awhile. I couldn’t believe how well it worked. Problem was, it stung so much I couldn’t use it if I had shaved within a day. Finally, I was in a huge hurry and bought the crystal (tdd) deodorant because of the breast cancer sticker on it. I think it’s really cool. It doesn’t have an initial fragrance. You wet it and roll on but it feels like there’s nothing there. It does not stain at all, a great quality. You may fear that you’re going to smell bad because you do get wet pits. But I’ve had less odor than even the 20% antiperspirants. For me, synthetic fabrics are killers!

the truth January 16, 2009 at 8:50 pm

With the increase of toxic chemicals entering into our personal care products its not surprising why people adopt alternatives. Alum Stones are natural stones used as deodorants. They are safe both for the skin and environment. These non-toxic and hypoallergenic stones can be applied to anywhere on the body and are multi functional. Alum stones are free from chemicals, perfumes, preservatives, colors and alcohol. They are very effective and economical, since a piece can last up to several months ( even up to years).
Composition

Alum stone crystal deodorants are composed of potassium alum. The natural crystal, potassium alum is totally unprocessed and is free from synthetic ammonium (a by-product of the chemical and nylon industry), which other crystal deodorants overwhelmingly contain. These synthetic ingredients may contain chemical residues and cause allergic reactions that earth-grown alum stone is safe from. Although natural and synthetic alums look similar, there is however a way to tell them a part. natural crystal breaks into irregular forms with irregular surfaces.

Alum stones feature physically large potassium alum molecules that are not absorbed in the skin or blood. Water has a molecular weight of 18, a potassium alum crystal molecule has a molecular weight of 474,38. A potassium alum crystal molecule in solution is hydrated 24 times and consequently has a molecular weight of 654.

Alum stones come from the western desert in abundance. They are simply collected from the desert surface, placed in sacks and then shipped to where they can be sold. Alum stone is one of the earth’s most common and useful minerals, used since civilization began.

How Do They Work?

alum stone are rubbed on to wet skin or can be dampened with a wet cloth and then rubbed on to dry skin to from a thin layer. The stones are so safe they can be used anywhere on the body! Alum Stones work as a deodorant by leaving a fine salty, slightly alkaline film on the skin, preventing the growth of microbes (bacteria) No bacteria = no odor! They keep the skin fresh and deodorized all day. They also allow the skin to perspire, something essential, keep the pores clear, and have the added advantage of not staining clothes.

Benefits of Alum Stones

Alum stone has not scent.
It can be used as an tonic.
Alum is astringent and mildly antiseptic.
alum stone is slightly alkaline, which creates an environment unfriendly to bacteria.
It gives instant relief from insect bites that respond to alkali. It reduces the swelling and redness and causes the bite to vanish quicker.
They are hypo-allergenic and contain no harmful chemicals.
They do not block pores so the body is able to breathe naturally.
They are made from natural mineral salts that will not stain your clothes.
Can also be applied to the feet for foot odor.
Where Can You Buy Them?

Alum stones have grown in popularity and most health food and supplement shops will have them. You can also order them online, they cost around $10 (around £6) per 100g, and there are many online stores providing them. Just search for “alum stone deodorant” in the search engines.

The great thing about Alum stones is that they will last you for years saving you lots of money in addition to the health benefits.

p.s i dont trust everything this beauty brain website says they exaggerate too much

Tracy March 1, 2009 at 2:59 am

*ahem* We ARE dropping over dead.

Cancer? Depression? Has anyone seen the rates on these lately? Compared to 100 or so years ago?

Personally, I can’t understand HOW the crazy chemicals in mainstream deodorants/shampoos/makeup/etc (not to mention “FOOD”) WOULDN’T hurt us!

I agree 100% w/ Shera.

thebeautybrains March 2, 2009 at 6:05 am

@Tracy – People live dozens of years longer than they did 100 years ago. Life expectancy continues to rise every year. We are more healthy than we have ever been in history.

If you don’t feel safe using chemicals, then don’t. Cosmetics are not needed. They make life better but you won’t die without them.

Nurse March 12, 2009 at 11:57 pm

I’m a bit concerned that the reply to this blog states that normal deodorants don’t contain toxic chemicals because we’d all be dropping dead if they did.
Regular antiperspirants DO contain toxic chemicals – aluminum and a lot of it at that!
We may not be dropping dead after one use but if you think about when these products began to be used (1960s) and think about the age of woman being diagnosed with breast cancer and dying (40 years and older) does that not ring some alarm bells? The incidence of woman being diagnosed with breast cancer at this age has increased dramatically in our generation and it is impossible to ignore these stats. Continued use of these antiperspirants is dangerous, enough study may not have been done but when the rate of breast cancer deaths increases hugely in woman 40+ after twenty or so years of using antiperspirant, does this not show an alarming link.

I think it was quite careless to say that the claims of harmful toxins are untrue.
Maybe go and read some research on the subject and you may think twice about the use of these products

thebeautybrains March 13, 2009 at 7:00 am

@Nurse – Thank you for your comments. Please see our post on “What Causes What” for a discussion about the logical flaw in correlation & causation.

No credible scientific agency has ever found evidence that antiperspirant use is linked to cancer. So, should we go with your unsupported, fear-mongering opinion, or go with the conclusions of the cancer researchers (e.g. ACS) who actually study these things?

The aluminum compounds in antiperspirants are no more cancer-causing than the aluminum used to make cans for soda pop.

Angela July 30, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Even though the crystal will last you over a year, it has *NEVER* worked for me! :( Stinky! But…I sweat a lot. Ugh.

Kalin September 13, 2009 at 8:28 pm

You do realize that to do enough research to make the connection between deodorants and cancer, you’d have to put up a lot of money and make no profit whatsoever. Who is going to do that? The American Cancer Society? The multi-billion dollar drug companies? The FDA? This is America. It’s all about the money, not the people. If you think the connection isn’t there because there isn’t one, guess again. You can’t make a profit from a natural cure because you can’t put a patent on it. Man-made = make a profit. Why sink millions of dollars in a study that will tank some of the largest money making corporations in America AND not make you a dime back? No credible scientific agency would. You wouldn’t. I wouldn’t, and the pharmaceutical companies would discredit you if you tried. Stop thinking that the deodorant companies have your back. They’d push you under a bus for a dollar with no regret, if it didn’t get them sued. It’s the American Way.

Emma September 14, 2009 at 4:18 am

Not sure about mainsteam doedorants, i have not used them sunce in my teens, i remember they made my clothes stain and my pits sting, that can’t be healthy!
I have been using Crystal deodorants for 3 years or so now, i have gone from the refilable spray to a refillable push up, to a push up which you just wet (pitrock).
I do suffer from smelling under my arms if i do not use deodorant, so i am happy to say that crystal deodorants stop me from smelling 100% all day long!
They don’t not stop me sweating which i can live with as i understand it is healthy to sweat anyway. (whats the point in going to the gym to get healthy and not being unhealthy by not sweating)!!??
I buy mine from BOOTS in the uk, or ebay, i recommend crystal deodorants to anyone i love them!

rick September 24, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Where are the ‘Brains’ in “The Beauty Brains”?!?!?
They say that claims that regular deodorants are made with highly toxic chemicals aren’t true because “If that was true we’d all be dropping over dead!”. My god, could there be a more ditzy analysis? There are countless highly toxic chemicals in all kinds of cosmetics marketed to the Beautiful but Naive And Innocent, or simply Brainless and Vain such as the writers of this website. The fact that you don’t drop dead as soon as you use them is not proof that they are harmless. What morons!
These brainless women then go on to say that toxins are not expelled in sweat. Completely wrong again. Sweating is one of the ways toxins are carried out of the body, along with urine, feces, and breath.
Best not to believe ANYTHING on this website without thorough research to find out if these dumb beauties are spouting more crap simply to support their advertisers. The authors are either criminally greedy or criminally stupid.

thebeautybrains September 24, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Hi Rick. Thanks for stopping by our website and for taking the time to leave a comment. It reminded us that we need to write a post about “how to recognize a tongue in cheek comment.” By the way, if you’d like to leave another comment identifying the “countless highly toxic chemicals” that are used in cosmetics, we’d be glad to review what the scientific literature has to say about them. Have a nice day. (signed) The Criminally Greedy and Stupid Beauty Brains.

Just about every bit of research is flawed
the cancer society is also a big scam . they have had billions of pounds . And what cures have they found Nothing . cancer is the biggest money making illness there is . do your own research dont trust any advise from the world heath organization. All these paople work for each other to prtect there profits. Chemicals are in everything food and water and cosmetics . Put the word codex in you tube . And watch the 5 parts part 3 will scare the life out of you . Literally . We have all had it if codex get there way from december 09

Dwayne January 4, 2010 at 2:17 pm

In a few days, I’ll be receiving a rock of this mineral crystal, and I’ll be giving it a whirl. I have some weird issues with most kinds of deodorant – I’ve only found 2 so far that don’t cause my armpit skin to slough off in chunks (gross, I know!)

Unfortunately, of the two, one I can no longer buy in any local stores, and the other makes me smell like a girl. For a few few days I tried using rubbing alcohol and I had no issues for about 28 hours worth or so. Oddly enough, mint listerine seems to work best, lasting about 30 hours for any sort of B.O. to rear its stinky head. But all of this was including relatively bland foods and no exercise at all.

We’ll see how one of these mineral crystals works, especially alongside foods heavy in garlic, some impressive amounts of booze, and after an hour or two at the gym (not all at the same time, though!)

If that doesn’t work, I’ll just go out of my way to buy a few cases (crates? pallets? shipping containers?) of the only deodorant that doesn’t seem to cause any problems and try to make it through life on that. Either way, I’ll let everyone know how it goes. The way I see it: either you’re dreadfully concerned about modern deodorants, in which case your mind is already made up, you’re happy with what you already have, or you don’t care about everyone else’s knee jerk reactions, have issues, and want to know if it will work for you. I can be one small anecdotal snippet if it’s the latter.

OneStickShy January 25, 2010 at 2:38 am

The danger of aluminum in deodorants ISN’T dummy science. Basic college chemistry proves how aluminum passes through the cell walls and breaks down into a++++ free radicals. Potassium alum salts, however, is a negatively charged ion and will NOT pass the cell wall like regular aluminum derivatives. Because it is not absorbed into the body (like the stuff in regular sprays, sticks, and roll ons), it cannot accumulate and cause harm. And no, I will not spoon feed you websites–pick up a chemistry book and find out for yourself.

As to how well the product works, I’ve tried different brands with different results (I wonder if the concentrations differ). I use the roll on form and as long as I give it a good shake each time, it works great for me, even in the heat and humidity of Florida. Does help to keep those pits well shaved. I know a few guys who use it with good results, but I doubt they’d admit it to anyone :)

Chaya February 24, 2010 at 8:54 am

Just to chime in with some personal experience… I have been using the crystal rock deodorant for several years now and am very happy because:
–it doesn’t make my clothes crunchy and yellow in the armpits
–it works (I don’t smell)
–it’s very cost effective
and best of all, it doesn’t give me underarm rashes like virtually every other deodorant/antiperspirant I’ve tried. So if you have sensitive skin, you may want to give the rock a whirl.

I find that the solid form (but in a plastic sheath, shaped like a ‘normal’ deodorant stick so it’s easy to apply) works better than the roll-on, and it’s easiest to apply right after I shower to damp armpits.

Just my $.02

Alex Harris March 18, 2010 at 1:46 pm

This post poses some interesting ideas, but it is quite obvious to me that the FDA and other governing bodies are not so concerned about consumers dropping over dead. Take cigarettes and alcohol for example. It is all about increasing profit and having enough pull on Capitol Hill by paying huge amounts to evil lobbyists and special interest groups. So, to say that mainstream chemical rich deodorants cannot be harmful purely for the reason of regulations preventing them from selling a product that causes harm is a flawed argument.

With that said, as a loyal crystal deodorant user for almost 2o years I will never go back to traditional gel and stick deodorants. Not because of fear for potentially harmful toxins in antiperspirants and fragrance deodorants, but purely for the fact that crystal deodorants really work. And I love that it is natural. However, the word ‘natural’ is a tricky one. It is completely unregulated, and just about any product, natural or not, can be labeled natural without any recourse from the governing bodies that are supposed to be protecting us. All a product really needs to be labeled natural is to have one natural ingredient and the rest can be chemically derived. So be aware if what you want is an entirely natural product. Until the term natural becomes regulated companies will most likely not stop misleading marketing tactics, since technically they are not breaking any rules.

I have worked in the cosmetic industry for about 15 years now, and I have seen more misleading advertising than you could imagine. And it appears that this occurs with crystal deodorant stones as well. When doing some investigating I found that there are two types of crystal deodorant stones, one natural and one synthetic, but both claim to be natural. I did further research and found that natural crystal deodorant stones are made from the naturally occurring mineral potassium alum (rock form). Chemically manufactured crystal deodorants are made from synthetic alum, which is created by synthesizing aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) with acid and adding ammonium sulfate. So, if you want to buy natural crystal deodorants do a little research before purchasing.

In my research I found a company out of Switzerland that makes crystal deodorant products and they do a good job of explaining and showing the differences between synthetic and natural crystal deodorant stones. On their Website they state that a natural crystal deodorant stone is translucent or almost transparent. A synthetic, chemical based crystal deodorant is completely opaque and whitish. They say that the aluminum trihydroxide (ATH), which is a white powder, used in the manufacturing process of synthetic crystal deodorant stones is what creates a white, opaque stone.

Anne Fields March 19, 2010 at 7:29 am

There are some interesting photos of the comparison of natural and synthetic crystal deodorant stones here: http://www.verdan.net/us/natural-crystal-deodorant-questions/deodorant-stone-comparison.html

mike Fessler March 25, 2010 at 11:34 am

Alum salts are part of the aluminum family. They are a transitory metal without any human benefit. Dr Exley and Dr. Dabre’s group found aluminum in breast cysts and breast tumors in two separate clinical trials. All alums soak into the tissues eventually. Once inside the tissues they reside in the cells displacing the calcium and in abundance forms microcalification. There are some of us who will never faced the truth but petroleum is natural and comes from the earth. Why error on the side of alum salts. Your body does not require alum. Sure it’s effective in the underarm and closes down the sweat duct by inflammation. So what happens when we go to get a mammogram and the alum salts become positive charged in the body? Our clinical test showed the upper outer quadrant an area of aluminum concentration for the non dominant side.

Wow, what an unusually high concentration of ignorance.

Party on, Dudes!

Kamee July 10, 2010 at 12:43 pm

You people are so embarassing yourselves! You write stuff that children in highschool already know about, and you don’t! Get yourself educated first, about basic things, such as human biology (sweat glands and what they do for example) and then go on writing about more complex things. You’ve rendered yourself so not – credible that I wont believe a single word you write on your entire website. Or you think other people are as ignorant as you are and will fall for things you write? As a matter of fact, I came across it first by this article and Im never setting my eye on it again, so whatever “intelligent” comment you may leave behind will be a waste of your time. As was my time spent on this page as well of all the people who read it.

Sarah August 4, 2010 at 9:36 pm

It seems people can separate myth from fact in Canada. Maybe Kamee should go study “human biology” over there.

Whilst it might be ‘healthy’, rock deodorant defeats the whole point of a deodorant because it doesn’t stop people smelling. I have a friend who uses the rock and she constantly stinks of BO – I’m trying to break the news to her gently.

Nothing works better in preventing stinky underarms than a bit squeez of lemon :)

Before you start using the alum “rock” have your thyroid check for T3 and T4. If the levels start to change after using the “rock” you can expect changes for your thyroid and that will affect the immune system. Anyone heard of Dr. Hal Huggins and his tracing aluminum and other metals to breast cancer via the teeth? Your gums drain thru the subclavian lymph node and exit your underarm. So go ahead and use a cosmetic that is considered a drug by the FDA with only cosmetic safety claims. This alum powder is used to tan leather and is sold very cheap from china. Many people have told me they used the “rock” and stopped sweating in the underarms, and now they have breast issues such as tender and soreness along with thyroid issues. It did work for these people but the health consequences are not worth it.
