The Mystery Of Mineral Makeup

by Mid Brain on March 1, 2008

Kate’s curious: I have heard that mineral makeup is better for sensitive skin. Is it truly better or just a marketing tool to get women to buy the “in style” makeup of the moment?

Mid Brain responds:

We get a LOT of questions about mineral makeup, so the Right Brain is researching this topic so we can answer all of them. I can’t say too much right now, but we have something special in mind for you guys! If you’ve ever wondered about mineral cosmetics, you won’t want to miss this Beauty Brains exclusive event. Keep your eyes on the blog next month for more news.

In the meantime, you can read this post about mineral deodorants.

oooh as an avid mineral make-up wearer(is that even a word?) I must say I am intrigued :) Looking forward to it!

Lynnette March 3, 2008 at 9:54 am

I look forward to this article, too!
I do have to say that I use minerals and have for a long time. My skin is sensitive and sensitized. There is a difference. I never reacted to minerals on the face or on the eyes.
It does calm the skin, as I use it after waxing clients’ brow and lip areas. You can see an immediate calming of the skin.
My daughter also has extremely sensitive and extremely sensitized skin and the minerals are working for her. (I just talked her into trying them, as she will listen to girlfriends who buy OTC stuff because it works for them!)
My skin is also very, very dry and the minerals do not flake or make it seem you have makeup on.
Just make sure you have the right brushes, as minerals will not go on correctly with plastic bristles!
buenos dias,
Lynnette

It is much much better for the skin then most other makeup, plus many times mineral makeup includes SPF…at least Jane Iredale skin care minerals has an SPF of 20. Highly recommend minerals and use it myself! http://www.AgelessApple.com

I currently am using Bare Minerals.

Shannon March 9, 2008 at 11:29 am

I’m also using Bare Minerals, and am very interested to know how it stacks up to other Mineral makeup, and whether it’s really better. Thanks for doing such great work!

Sara March 9, 2008 at 11:45 am

Can’t wait to hear what you come up with. Everyday Minerals is huge with great reviews from users. Hope you include in your research.

I would like feedback on a comparison between Bare Minerals and Serious Skin Care Pro Minerals Bella Rose. I like the SSC better than Sheer Cover and would like more reviews of B.M. before I shell out more money!

I love my Erth Minerals. http://www.lushbrush.com or http://www.erthminerals.com .

i am also curious about lumiere mineral makeup. i have never used their products. they use silk powder and pearl powder- are the amino acids in these products really beneficial to the skin?

Anna March 16, 2008 at 10:59 am

I’ve tried a lot of different brands of mineral makeup, and most of them make my oily skin even shinier. Are there any brands of mineral makeup that give you matte finish?

Liz April 4, 2008 at 10:22 am

I once tried the Neutrogena mineral foundation that has a brush built into the container. I found that the brush and the buffing technique irritated my skin, making it more red and sensitive than usual. I suspect that even with a softer brush, the buffing technique would not work out well for me. Can you use other techniques for application?

Deborah April 15, 2008 at 11:58 am

Jane Iredale is the original mineral makeup line that started it all–please include them

Julia April 15, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I use Amore mineral makeup but have also used Jane Iredale and Physician’s Formula. I’d put Amore at the top for coverage and the matte finish it provides.
However, I would like to know how Amore stacks up to Youngblood and Bare Minerals.
Really looking forward to the article.

Serenity May 1, 2008 at 7:37 am

Wow! I’m very interested in reading the article.

I wear Loreal Bare Naturale Mineral makeup foundation. I would like to know more about that and others like Physician’s Formula, Jane Iredale, Bare Minerals, Sheer Cover and Maybelline.

Thanks!

I would l-o-o-o-v-e to hear comparisons on mineral makeup brands. I tried i.d. Bare Excentuals and it gave me hives. Apparently I am allergic to the bismuth oxychloride? I love Fyrinnae and Mad Minerals so far, and would love to hear more about True Colors, and MicaBella.
Blessings,
K

Please add Dash Minerals to the brands that you compare. Very pure, very affordable. I had used Be for about 5 years, and was so thrilled with Dash products that I started selling them.
Really…compare. You (and your wallet) will be happy that you did.

Kim May 7, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Dash Minerals are free of parabens and bismuth oxychloride.
I have a 16 year old daughter who loved BE also, but now wears only Dash because her face cleared up completely within a month.

Please include my favorite which is UGloGirl. I have tried Alima, LaurEss and Jane Iredale. the latter made my skin itch. I have dryish skin and UGloGirl was the best of the ones I tried.

Lily May 30, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Hi. Can you please include mineral fusion? I’ve been using BE for years and I love mineral make-up. However I noticed this brand sold at a local Whole Foods store and picked up the kit but I haven’t used it yet. I want to know how it compares in terms of ingredients since it’s supposed to be paraben and talc free.

Tracy June 1, 2008 at 8:47 am

Please include Mary Kay, which I think is bad because of the talc, and everday minerals, which is a really nice product and less expensive than BM. Thank you.

I justed started using Cover Fx. It is a wonderful product for all skin types. The range of coverage it provides offers is phenomenal. I have moderate acne scarring and deep undereye circles and I have never before achieved such natural, flawless results with any OTC foundation or concealer. Please include this line in your research of mineral products.

I work as a makeup artist in a large-ish cosmetics store, and have noticed the influx of mineral brands and hopeful customers. Having had to work with them all day, every day, I cal tell you that there is a difference in mineral makeups. My advice to anyone looking to make the change is to look at the labels before you do anything else. A lot of the newer drugstore brands have added a couple of minerals to their foundations, and are now hawking these new products are true mineral brands. For example, one brand contains petroleum, mineral oil AND parabens. Those are things that you should be trying to avoid when makeing the switch to mineral makeups.

As a Chocolate girl, I cannot stress how important it is to have a color matching done before buying. Because of the titanium dioxide, mica and zinc in almost every brand that I’ve come across, deeper skin tones can end up with a grayish cast to the skin if it isn’t the right formulation. Go to the store first thing in the morning, put it on and watch how it wears as you go about your day.

Lastly, don’t go buy a certain brand because everyone and her mother uses it too. It may not work for you. For example, my mother uses BareMinerals for her deeper, more reddish undertoned skin, but on my yellow based skin, it always comes out looking dry, flat and badly made up without a ton of product mixing. Plus it makes me itchy. I use a wonderful pressed mineral foundation called PUR Minerals. Their colors are more neutral based, and the foundations have shea butter and vitamin E.

I have been using YoAnna’s Earth Minerals makeup for about six months and love it. I am anxious to hear how this makeup stacks up to the others. I use to use Jane Irdale. But since I have been using YoAnna, people have said my skin looks great and that I look much younger.

Natalia July 17, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Could you please include Affordable Mineral Makeup and Afterglow. I used to use BE and it made my skin itch. After doing some research I found out it contains bismuth oxychloride, which can cause irritation and even rosacea!.

rachael July 18, 2008 at 6:18 pm

please add prespectives to the list! i used to use bare minerals, and just like a couple of you said.. it gave me hives, and really bad blemishes that hurt! i recently saw prespectives in the mall, and so far it works pretty good! thanks!

Nicole August 13, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Please include DreamWorld Minerals, Meow Cosmetics, bareFaced Minereals, Lumiere, and Everyday Minerals.

Crystal January 10, 2009 at 12:48 pm

I love healthy make-up for my skin. I was with estee lauder for years after leaving the company I wanted a make-up that was great for my skin and I found the best mineral make-up on the market. It is susan posnick cosmetics, she has an spf of 26 and all her foundation is 100% minerals. My skin hasn’t looked better and younger! I would recommend her line to anyone who cares about your skin!

Try 1889Minerals for a good color selection for light through dark skin with all varieties of undertones. LOTS of eye and cheek colors too.

In March 2008 you said that you would be doing a study on the different kinds of minerals makeup and for us to keep a watch out for it – mind telling me, as of 5/13/2011 where that article might be? My daughter has very difficult acne prone breakout skin and I have been looking forward to someone who is objective to give an objective honest opinion. If you weren’t able to do your study do you an idea where I might go to get one?
