i am interested in the use of bismuth in mineral make up. I have been told that this is a cheap filler in mineral make up, and that is why after using make up for a while, you can become itchy.
Lilia Says:
I’ve been buying Silk Naturals available online and would like to learn more about it. Thanks.
viannee Says:
I tried signature minerals and my skin liked it. I’ve been hearing a lot of raves about monave, silk naturals and joppa. i hope you can add it. thanks.
Anna Says:
I use Bare Minerals eyeshadows, Physician’s formula and L’oreal mineral face powders.
Pam Says:
I used Jane Iredale Pure pressed Base almost daily for about three years. I have rosacea, seb dermatitis, and overall sensitive skin. It never was irritating. I am satisfied with the coverage of my redness, and the color, Warm Silk, is very natural and a great match. It is very expensive, and since in the last year my skin has improved I have started using a liquid makeup that is more affordable, and has better coverage. I can tell you three things about the Jane Iredale that you might find useful. I live in Florida, and the saleswoman tod me to get the pressed base, not the loose mineral foundation, because in our humidity the loose one might get caked up. I never tried a loose version, so I don’t know if that would have happened. Another thing: I have always had blackheads, and while using this makeup I tried to get rid of them using BHA exfoliant, with no success. I wonder if this was because the titanium dioxide in this makeup worsened the clogging of my pores. Lastly, a few times I dropped the compact and the powder broke apart. (Not every time I dropped it, though.)
Lynn Says:
I love bare minerals. All the products are great.
Sue Says:
I’ve used Physician’s Formula (it was on sale
). I don’t know WHY it covers well or WHY it lasts longer than my liquid foundation but I’d like to learn. I’d also love to know more about other brands people like.
Candice Says:
Bare Escentuals
Diana Says:
I’ve tried Bare Escentuals, Jane Irendale and Meow Cosmetics in the past. I think I like Jane Irendale the best but it is also the most expensive.
GothicRapunzel Says:
I’m curious about everyday minerals, and I’m curious to see how the different mineral makeup companies stack up against each other.
Elaine Says:
I’m very interested in what you find regarding mineral makeups, in fact what defines it as “mineral” vs. other powder foundations. I have been using Clinique’s Superpowder Double Face Makeup for years and love it. The mineral makeup marketers love to say how bad the talc in other powders is, but talc is a mineral too!
spartan Says:
i am currently experimenting with meow and youngblood. i’m hoping you can help answer what mineral foundation is best for over-50 skin and roseacea.
Clara Says:
I luv Valana Minerals. Great selection of colors that doesn’t make me look pale or chalky.
Isabel Says:
I just saw that Avon now has a line of mineral makeup. I use Bare Escentuals but am wondering how’s the Avon line since it’s more affordable.
Anna Says:
I want to mention something interestng I was told about Bare essentials eyeshadow by a Sephora sales rep. She told me that there was no expiration date for the eyeshadows, since “it was impossible for them to go bad” she told me they they could be used indefinitely.
I don’t know, sounds a little hokey to me!
girl150 Says:
I’d like to learn more about L’Oreal and Mary Kay mineral make-ups.
dancerjodi Says:
I’ve been using http://www.everydayminerals.com/
anonymiss Says:
Another Everyday Minerals user here. Would love to hear your thoughts on this very affordable mineral makeup. I definitely prefer it to some of the more expensive brands (and not only because of the price). Bare Escentuals, for example, feels gritty compared to Everyday Minerals, IMO.
Ani Says:
I’d like to hear about the drugstore brands, Physician’s Formula particularly.
koko Says:
I was recently diagnosed with rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis, and my dermatologist instructed me to stick with noncomedogenic products. I had been using Bare Escentuals (Bare Minerals) and though I’m not sure it was exacerbating my conditions, I did notice that it made my skin itchy. I had heard anecdotally that BE was noncomedogenic, but could not find this claim on any of their packaging. So I began hunting for a new mineral makeup. The only ones I could find that are labeled as noncomedogenic are Jane Iredale and Youngblood. I’ve swtiched over to Jane Iredale as a result, and I’ve noticed that my skin is not itching. I’d like to know what it is about some mineral makeups that causes itching (I’ve read that it has to do with bismuth and/or parabens). And I’d also like to know whether mineral makeup is in fact “good for your skin,” which is what so many purveyors of this stuff claim. Lastly, I’d like to know whether the amount of natural sunscreen in these products–titanium dioxide, etc.–is sufficient to obviate the need for a separate sunscreen product, and whether it provides broad spectrum protection.
Marnie Says:
I have been using Bare Escentuals for a while and I liked the look, but felt that after a few hours it looked somewhat caked (but I might be using too much). I esp like their concealer and brush. I just bought Jane Iredale loose powder foundation because I had heard rave reviews, but I find that the coverage isn’t as good. Neither product seemed to “help” my skin as they claim (same blackheads, same acne bumps, same blotchiness). They both do look fantastic on camera.
Sage Says:
I am very curious about the Bare Escentuals product called RareMinerals Skin Revival Treatment. I honestly think it’s a total crock but the way they are marketing it is genius. I tried it and found it to do pretty much nothing. And you should see the literature that comes with this stuff — such a load of utter fiction (”we use ancient soil” blah blah blah). But I’d love to read what you uncover about this. Thanks.
Carol Ann Says:
I love Bare Escentuals Bisque. I use it for concealer and for foundation. It’s the only thing that makes my skin look flawless and stays on. I am 51, with dry skin and rosacea. It covers the rosacea and the dark pigmentation around one of my eyes.
Lillybeth Says:
Mary Kay’s mineral foundation (been in the states for ages but being launch in New Zealand in May…) and Avon’s too. Please!!?! Comparisons would be AWESOME. Thanks so much.
xx

Lisa Says:
I use Philosophy’s supernatural. I have notice increased breakouts in the last year I wonder if it is due to the mineral makeup. I have been using it for 3 years first bare minerals now philosophy because of the application sponge. I do not think the makeup is better for me but i do like that i do not feel it on my face. I am considering trying Laura Geller’s baked foundation as an alternative. if you have any knowledge about this line it would be very helpful.Thanks.
lina Says:
Everyday Minerals
Mary-K Says:
Mary Kay Cosmetics has recently launched a great mineral powder foundation as well as mineral powder color products. I love how my skin looks like it is naturally flawless rather than just “covered up” with other foundations.
Mindy Says:
J. Lynne Cosmetics has some nice trial sizes. http://www.jlynnecosmetics.com/ I still haven’t found a good color match, however.
Cara Says:
Another vote for Everyday Minerals. I personally used the foundation, concealer and finishing dust.
I also wanted to say that I just discovered this site the other day and I am loving it. It appeals to both my girly and geeky sides.
Miss Laura Mars Says:
Physician’s Formula vote!
Cassie Says:
I love everydayminerals.com as well. It’s so affordable and it has been a wonderful product to use. I also like their shadows and blushes.
Marie Says:
I’ve used Bare Escentuals which I found to cover very well. Currently I’m using Silk Naturals & The Natural Source but I don’t find that they cover as well as BE.
Christi Says:
Almay has a new mineral foundation — Pure Blends — and I’d like to know how much these powders are or aren’t appropriate for sensitive skin since that is a focus in the brand’s reputation.
And this segues into my next question which is: Could you give a rundown on ingredients that are commonly used and what their purposes are?
Thanks so much.
Busylizzie Says:
Hi! I’ve only used Physician’s Formula so far, and would love to hear how it stacks up. Thanks.
Izumi Says:
I’ve been curious about Dr.Hauschka makeup. The SA told me that it’s been a mineral-based makeup line long before all the hype surrounding mineral makeup.
Pam Says:
Meow Cosmetics, Alima, and Pure Luxe are smaller brands that a lot of people seem to like. I’d love to know how they rank against the big guns!
Betty Says:
I use Neutrogena mineral make-up. Please let us know if mineral make-up is better for mature, dry skin prone to whiteheads, than liquid foundation. Thanks
Lynnette Says:
Jane Iredale and Glo Minerals, please.
–PAM– if you drop the compact, the powder will break apart. NO need to toss it though, as you can just make it inot a powder. That will not constitute it being a loose. Any product that is dropped in the compact should break.
buenos dias,
Lynnette

I like urban decay’s hallucination shade. love it actually, heavy coverage or light depending on what you want. more yellow base than most pinky ones and best of all… no glitter.
Lucia Says:
Bare escentuals, it makes my skin look fabulous
Monica Says:
I have tried Bare Minerals, Glo, Jane Iredale and Arbonne. Bare Minerals caused itching. By far my favorite was Jane Iredale but the price was a bit steep. I was told by a Jane Iredale rep to apply the minerals in downward strokes to create a more “matte” vs glowing look. She explained that the minerals are tiny flakes, and when aplied in downward strokes it creates application perfection. The individual mineral “flakes” lie like fish scales, overlapping slightly, which creates a smooth finish. I noticed everywhere else they suggest application with a swirling motion of brush. Would love to hear your thoughts on application…I currently use Arbonne and have been very happy with their mineral makeup line and cost.
Catarina Says:
I am curious about Laura Mercier and Bare Escentuals. Thanks!

Misty Says:
Bare Escentuals, Philosophy Supernatural, Neutrogena Pressed Minerals, Garden Botanika (brand new), Almay, Pur Minerals
Jessica Says:
I love Pure Luxe Cosmetics. You can buy 1.00 samples that come in little containers, not the messy plastic bags.
Alcy Says:
Jane Iredale because they have a pressed foundation.
gaflower Says:
Jane Iredale gets my vote! I am an aesthetician student and we use it at our school…great coverage…perfect color matching and the product lasts quite a long time. I personally would pay a little more for the perfect color and coverage….correct on using downward strokes in application also using a flat bronzer type brush! You can also purchase sample sizes online to try before you buy!
Donna frederick-Neznek Says:
I started out using Bare Minerals.
I was very pleased with them until one day @ the Spa, when I tried the True line of minerals. I found them to be more “natural” looking and comparative in price. This was only the second mineral i have tried, but i have seen a big difference in opacity between True & Bare Minerals. I still use a cream concealer prior to application as I have found neither really gives me the coverage I desire. Is there something out there that gives the coverage (sans concealer) without the look of build-up?
EMiriamD Says:
In addition to the usual suspects I’m interested in Kathleen Minerals Cover-Silk mineral foundation, which comes in both powder and liquid form. The Makeup Artists Choice website, which is where I first saw this line, says it does not contain bismuth. Curious to see what the Beauty Brains have to say about it!
Allie Says:
Bare Minerals. Good coverage. Doesn’t melt off in the heat.
Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation–It is a liquid. What in the world is this? How is it different than other liquid foundations?
Kari Says:
I’m interested in Maybelline Mineral Powder Natural Perfecting Foundation. I’ve been using it now for only about a week, so I can’t say whether or not it’s doing any good for my skin.
Meresankh Says:
I use Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals, and have for a few years now. I have no complaints, but I wouldn’t mind knowing how other mineral make-ups stack up.
MR Says:
Could you research different brands? I’m curious about mineral makeup, but I’m not up to spending $60 on Bare Escentuals. Could you compare that and other pricey brands with the mineral lines from Avon, Physicians Formula, Maybelline, and other drugstore brands? I want to see whether the cheaper ones work as well as the pricey ones.
makeupmonkey Says:
I’d like to see more information on Bare Escentuals and Everyday Minerals.
Debbie Says:
I use glominerals, I have for a couple of years now. I also recently ordered the e.l.f. mineral concealer to try. I am getting used to it. I will be very interested in the results of this research. Thank you!
Julia Says:
I have been using Bare Escentuals Minerals AD for about a year. I am 54 yrs old and had a hard time finding a makeup that worked with my changing complexion and coloring. I love this product. I am complemented on my complexion – and I have never had those compliments. I believe that this makeup evens out the tones of my skin, provides a special glow to my complexion. I even forget to take it off at night and don’t have the tell-tale clogs in the morning. Neither do I have that dryed caked feeling that I get with other makeups.
But mostly, I just like that it evens my skin tones and makes me look younger. Call me a fool -and not a beauty brains girl – but I do believe it works!
BTW it also works for my 60 yr old sister in law. She has recommended it to so many happy campers that she thinks she should get a commission!
J. Rose Says:
I have been using Erth Minerals for about a year now. I love the products & love the fact that they don’t use nanoparticles or bismuth like some other brands. They also have nice trial-size kits & they are way more affordable than some of the other brands I’ve tried.

Ale Says:
There are so many brands it is hard to figure out where to start with! If I were to mention brands I’m interested in: Everyday Minerals, Silk Naturals
However, I think it would be even more useful to go over the main ingredients and claims. Like the sun protection due to the use of titanium and zinc oxides. I’ve also heard that mineral powders can’t harbor bacteria and thus are safe to use for years. For makeup containing foody ingredients (eg. rice powder, cornstarch), I’ve heard that they can sustain bacteria more easily and thus can go bad, but also that they can feed the bacteria that causes acne. And there are the terms comedogenic and micronized ingredients.
I must say that the reasons I’m attracted to mineral makeup are that the list of ingredients is short and usually free of irritating fragrance, and the dazzling variety of shades. If I can think of any other claims that have made me raise an eyebrow, I’ll post back.
Liz Says:
I use EveryDay Minerals. They seem to have less ingredients than other brands, and I am curious if this makes them “better.”
Kerry Says:
I used Bare Minerals for 8 years and it ended up destroying my skin with cystic acne and scarring. I am currently using Everyday Minerals, and I am curious to see the results of your research!
lina flick Says:
i am curious about pure luxe cosmetics, aromaleigh (they seem to have the most exciting colors online) everyday minerals (i used a sample of their semi-matte foundation and it was quite nice). i’m also curious if the antioxidants in mineral essence brand and julie hewett’s mineral makeup are really beneficial or if they’re too low in concentration to do anything – thanks!
Liz Says:
I’ve used the Colorescience mineral makeup for several years. I’ve had good results and a good color match. I’m curious to know if the SPF claims are valid and if the makeup is good for the skin, as the company claims in its marketing. The makeup is very expensive and I’d also like to know if it’s any better than the mineral makeup available in drug stores. –Thanks!
Laura Says:
My favorite is illuminare liquid mineral make-up. It doesn’t look dry like the powders and it’s not messy to use either. it lasts all day and has an spf21. it’s also really gentle on my sensative skin.
Kerry Says:
Curious about Physicians Formula Mineral Wear pressed powder, and how it compares to higher end loose mmu.
judith Says:
i generally use bare escentuals along with tarte mineral powder, however i recently got some mineral makeup for a costume from rickys – its called matisse nyc. im a little curious about that one, and whether or not its safe to use.
i would also like to know about laura mercier’s line of mineral powders…and ive also been wondering what the difference between bare escentuals and guthy renker’s sheer cover is!
Sheila Says:
Colorescience is definitely the best. Look into their beware compare test. Their Sunforgettable SPF 30 and Suncanny Foundation are both rated as an over-the-counter drug by the FDA, which tells you that in addition to the excellent wear, the sun protection is in fact stable and highly water resistant. Simply the best out there.
Anabeana Says:
Physicians Formula. It was on sale. It lasts longer and I don’t break out as much any more.
Autumn Says:
L’oreal just launched a line of mineral foundation/finishing powder/blush and eyeshadow. I’d like to see this reviewed as well. I like it so far, but am curious as to how it stands up to other brands.
Kimberly Says:
Love Bare Escuentuals from Sephora.
I have a corn allergy, so I have to be wary of makeup fillers.
J Says:
mineralmakeupmania.com is a fantastic resource, especially for foundation ingredients.
Linda Says:
Hi. I have used liquid and powder mineral makeup from Jane Iredale, Lavera, Terra Firma and Aromaleigh. Lavera is by far my favorite, but the coverage is very, very sheer. I usually end up combining it with another product.
I was also curious if you would look at Franche`. It is a line made in Houston. Their claim to fame is freeze dried minerals, but I would love to hear about it before a spend another $75.00 on one product.
Thank you.
Aileen Says:
I am very interested in Mineral foundations and would like to learn which would be the best brand to try. I am acne prone and have sensitive skin. I have read about Bare Minerals, Bare Escuentuals from Sephora, as well as Revlon ColorStay Mineral Foundation. I would really appreciate an opinion on these and any other Mineral type makeup for my type of skin.
Thanks!!

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about Meow Cosmetics and Everyday Minerals
Cate Says:
Holy Moly! I was just looking through the comments section over the weekend and there were like 6…now 78!! 79 even! Wow!
I use Bare Escentuals right now and have been using it for years…love love LOVE it!…..but part of me wants to try Jane Iredale. I have heard a lot of positive comments about it and there is a retailer in town apparently. Even better!
Allison Says:
how bout Everyday Minerals
Lenore Dorfman Says:
I love Bare escentuals but wonder if the new less expensive drugstore brands are just as pure-such as Neutrogena and Loreal
Quin Says:
I have dark brown skin and the only brand that looks great on me and doesn’t make me break out is Valana Minerals. Most companies don’t have colors for people like me with dark brown skin so I’m happy with Valana.
Jenna Says:
hey i also am a huge raver of BE however i am extremely curious as to whether the ingredients in youngblood or Jane Iredale are better?? also from reading another post i am also extremely curious about Dr.Hauschka’s line of mineral makeup if it is in fact created by a real Dr. and is therefore perhaps better for your skin??
VERY CURIOUS. CANT WAIT FOR RESULTS!
Judy Says:
I just read an article about mineral makeup and one products spokesperson actually said she would put on her makeup at night and sleep in it if she had to be our early the next day. Is she for real?

Sorry, I meant if she had to be OUT (not our) early the next day.
laura Says:
I use and like everyday minerals… http://www.everydayminerals.com/

I love Suncat mineral make up, it’s the best I’ve used so far closely followed by Everyday minerals. I do hope Suncat is covered and I can’t believe it’s not been mentioned yet.
Anna2 Says:
I began experimenting with mineral makeups some years ago when I began having rosacea-like symptoms. The minerals I tried at the time weren’t a good match at all, and they were too expensive, compared to other brands, but they DID seem to help my skin, so I kept wearing them til I used them up. Since then, I’ve sampled a LOT of brands, and my favorite for foundation is Alima, they’re the only brand I’ve found that makes a Cool shade that’s deep enough to actually match my skin tones. (I use a mix of C-3 and C-4)
Most brands try to get away with limiting their line to three or four shades in some weirdly warm/neutral tone that just makes me look dirty. Why do they do that?? Very frustrating.
Pure Luxe Cosmetics has some wonderful eye shadow shades, as does MAD Minerals.
I’m NOT a fan of Aromaleigh, no two containers of foundation that I bought were ever the same shade. I wore them for a good while, once I discovered them, since very few cosmetics companies seem to acknowledge my skintone as a shade. (Most seem to want me to cover my skin with some weirdly neutral tone to cancel out the ‘redness’ which only makes me look like a corpse.) I’ve also got issues with their notions of ‘customer service’.
britt Says:
I tried L’Oreal Bare Naturale powdered mineral foundation and was sorely disappointed. It was crumbly and the powder wouldn’t even stay on my face long enough to be applied. The brush was also poor quality. Once I used a better brush, the coverage was still blotchy.
Then for Valentine’s Day, my Husband got me Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear, which I like very much. I have the Face Powder, the Blush, and the Matte Finishing Veil. All three are great-fast and easy to use. The Finishing veil is designed most like L’Oreal’s, and it is a million times better. Plus, the Physician’s Formula will brush right off your clothes, but stay on your face all day.
anactoria Says:
I think I’ve used everything listed thusfar (BE, L’Oreal, Physicians Formula) and to be honest, the most expensive brand I used, La Bella Donna, was the best, save for the fact that it was far too dark for my skin! I have since tried Jane, Neutrogena (horrendous packaging), and Milani. I’d like to know the primary differences between the high and low end of mineral makesups since I have a hard time believing the formulations to be that different from each other.
Debbie Says:
I would like to know more about Avon’s mineral makeup Thanks.
skeptical hairdresser Says:
I had terrible reddish skin and used clinique and then lancombe liquid makeups. Then i switched to Bare Escentuals.
I don’t use it the way they say, I put on a thin thin touch of vaseline while my face is still wet, then I take the medium base and put it on my nose, around my nose, and chin, then I use any
kind of cheek stuff.Sometimes Bare Escentuals, sometimes something else.
Generally now my skin is 100% better!
MacRae Says:
I have used Jane Iredale. I have extremely sensitive, dry eyes and have a hard time wearing ANY eye makeup. The mineral shadows seem to work the best. Any advice about why this is? What do the minerals have or lack that make them less irritating than the traditional cosmetics? Please empower me to be a better label reader!
Jen Says:
Alima and Lumiere are my two favorite brands.
Laura Says:
Have only tried L’Oreal, and would like to know how it compares to the more expensive brands.
Teresa Says:
Aromaleigh
Keri Says:
I use Bare Escentuals myself but I am interested in learning more about the drugstore options like Loreal, Physician’s Formula, Maybelline, etc. and how they compare to BE. Can’t wait to see your review!
Cinnamon Says:
My sister bought all of us Bare Minerals starter kits for Christmas. I am 51 with fairly unlined skin for my age. While I like the color, the powder settles into wrinkles I didn’t even know I had after an hour or so. The more buffing, the drier my skin gets. Is this one of those products that works best for younger women?
Anja Says:
hello, i have lupus AND huge pores. i’m very light skinned but the lupus ’spots’ are much darker. i’ve had to stop using my liquid foundation because it just seemed to emfasize my pours, lines, and splotches MORE. Now i can’t figure out what company/maker of mineral make up i should try. HELP! i’d love to wear make up again!
~imp.
Angela B Says:
The best mineral makeup I have found is through Alima cosmetics based in Portland, Oregon. http://www.alimacosmetics.com
They are truly a Natural mineral makeup with no additives or harmful substances! I always get free samples and loyalty points! Wonderful makeup & company!!!
Anne Says:
Seems I’m the only one using Sheer Cover. I started with Bare Minerals and it didn’t work at all on my fare complexion. I looked orange!! My husband still talks about it. But, he and I both think I look great in Sheer Cover.
I am hard on makeup and expect to be able to put it on once and have it last all day. SC does. I don’t use much, however, because it will cake. And, I’m careful to avoid my eye area where, at 40, I have fine lines and the powder will settle and make me look old.
Bev Says:
I’m in my 50’s and have used a lot of makeup (think of the 60’s and the Twiggy look). I read in one of the magazines geared for my age that Neutrogena was good.
I tried it and like it and it covers the red pimples (from hormones or wine) very well.
Now I am real curious about the brands mentioned above.
Alison Says:
As a woman of color, I’ve had difficulty finding a mineral make up that didn’t leave a grayish tone. I’ve tried Bare Escentuals and recently tried Arbonne (which I love!).
Alic Says:
I’m currently using GloMinerals, which I love the feeling of – I wonder if the really high end brands are much better than, say the Physicians Formula. The GloMinerals promo material said that one of the reasons it and Jane Irydale were better brands was because they were more finely milled. Is that the only real difference?
constellar Says:
i am interested in an article that lets people know that many ‘mineral’ makeups are actually the same as mainstream, but with some added minerals ( such as most of those found in drugstores)
i am interested in makeup companies that do NOT use the cheap sunthetic filler of bismuth oxychloride.
i would like to see a complete review of jane iredale, mineral fusion which is found in whole foods, as well as the small but fine companies of monave, pure luxe, lumiere, fyrrinae , aromaleigh as well as any mineral makeup companies whose shades include pigments designed for women of color ( non ashy gray chalky)
i would like to kow if there are mineral makeup companies out there that offer formulas that are easy for travel ( small, compact rather than loose), strong pigments suitable for women of color and dramatic /theatrical use, and formulations that are extremely long lasting, as well as the aspect of more clean/pure and therefore more healthy.
thank you!
rosarita Says:
So many of the powdered mineral foundations become irritating to my skin over time. I’ve been using Neutrogena’s compact mineral foundation and so far so good – is there something in it that enables it to be in solid, compact form that makes it better for my skin than the powdered minerals? Do the minerals work differently if they are powdered as opposed to compressed?
rosarita Says:
I guess I should clarify that my question, above, refers to the new compact version of Neutrogena mineral foundation and not the old one that was distributed through a brush.
Memory Says:
I’m new to the make-up scene but bought a Bare Escentuals Bare Mineral starter kit. I enjoy it but haven’t tried anything else. I asked and was told by the sales woman that because it was all “minerals” that there was no expiration date, it wouldn’t go bad. But just a day ago as I was putting on my foundation I noticed on the side of the container “EXP 10/08″. Great! I had asked the question about expiration dates because I am not a heavy nor daily user of make up. If it has expired, what evil consequences will happen if I continue to use it?
I’m curious to learn from the Beauty Brains about any mineral company’s claim of “no expiration date”. Also the sunscreen SPF claims because perhaps I wear a lighter load of foundation than necessary to receive such SPF benefits. Additionally, in my starter kit I have the “i.d. bareVitamins skin rev-er upper”. I was told this product uses something that used to be prescription only, but they can use it in their product because (some doctor/oversight type person/agency) knows that BE wouldn’t put anything in their products that isn’t good for your skin. Sometimes I forget to put that on first, and wonder if my foundation, etc will still stay on. It does. So why use the other stuff? And what good does a ‘finishing powder’ (such as BE’s Mineral Veil) really do? I don’t always use it. In my mind it just could be more product to sell me.
I’m also curious about BE’s Platinum line. I think they also were advertising something about diamonds, but if I could afford diamonds, I’d rather wear them as jewelry rather than glitter spots on my face.
It’s great to read everyone’s comments and see the whole smorgazboard of mineral companies out there. I really look forward to your compilation on this topic Beauty Brains!
Dana Says:
I’m interested in Glo Minerals and Jane Iredale.
Does ANY mineral makeup work for rosacea, mid-stage (mostly red cheeks and chin)?
What minerals makeups work for sensitive skin, if any?
What are the components of an excellent mineral makeup?
Liz Says:
I’m a big fan of Mary Kay products, including their new line of mineral colors & foundations. In addtion to great quality, I also get great service from my consultant; she even calls me a few days after I buy something to make sure it’s working, and then offers to come get it from me & refund my money if I’m not completely happy. But, since I always get to try things before I buy them (with her teaching me how to use it properly), I rarely have to return anything!
Shannon Says:
I am curious about the RareMinerals Blemish Therapy; it is made by BareMinerals, and is a similar powder that you put on at night that claims to clear up blemishy skin… would it really work?

I’m interested to know if Sheer Cover works as well as Bare Escentuals (and if Bare Escentuals works as well as the brand claims).
Melanie Says:
I have used mineral makeups for about 7 years now and in the last year have developed itchy skin with MU. I know blismuth is a problem in this regard, but what about micas. I have tried one mica free foundation from Beautyblisscosmetics.com and it looks very cakie on, but no itchiness. The best looking foundation I have found is Sterling Minerals, but again I have the itchiness even without the blismuth ingredient. I have recently found Rejuva Minerals at rejuvaminerals.com but I haven’t given them a try yet. They claim to be mica free, blismuth free, and titanium free. Please enlighten me in regards to all factors of itchiness and mineral makeups.
Rosa Says:
I’m interested in Everyday Minerals and BE Rare Minerals (night makeup???)
Nancy Says:
MAC Cosmetics. Their mineral makeup does contain talc, which some other brands don’t. I see “no talc” being used as a selling point. Why is this?
mamacita Says:
Interested in philosophy and Jane Iredale loose powder formulas.
Lana Says:
First time on this site! I Love It! I tried Bare Essentuals and liked the natural glow it gave me. I got a rash, and found out it had bismuth oxide. I later found that is nickel (which I am allergic to). I looked on the comments and see that seems to be a common issue with the minerals makeup. I am in search of a minerals product that does not contain bismuth oxide. I have a catalog for Arbonne and see they offer a minerals foundation, and I am wondering if it contains bismuth oxide?! I feel the makeup should list that it contains bismuth oxide since so many people are allergic to nickel (they even mark fake silver “nickel free”). Good Luck! Thanks!
Kim Says:
I use Lumiere and love it (what’s up with silk in mineral make-up, btw?)
But I am really curious about the claims several companies have been making about how wearing mineral makeup at night is beneficial for skin.
DM Says:
I want to know about Glo Minerals. I think they’re great! They have the same micronization as Jane Iredale but more colors that blend better so you don’t end up looking like an old lady……..
BUT.. they use mica. Is there anything wrong with mica?
Kate Says:
Mineral Fusions, please — this line has been a Whole Foods exclusive for a long time but they’re now starting to let smaller retailers sell it. I heard that the Whole Foods higher-ups loved GloMinerals but wanted something more environmentally sound, and so Mineral Fusions was born. I’d be very interested in a complete review of this line and others that claim to have high environmentally-based standards.
Hannah Says:
Bare Escentuals – i.d. bare minerals are my fav!
Kerri Says:
I am currently using Jane Iredale, mainly because they have pressed powder formulations. I’d love to see how it compares to other mineral makeup lines.
Patty Says:
I’ve just started using Jane Iredale’s Liquid Minerals. I’d like to know if it’s better than the Clinique non-oily liquid foundation I’ve used for years. I chose the liquid minerals formulation because loose powders seem to irritate my sinuses (I have allergies). Thanks much!

I am saddened that u are exploiting and toying to corrupt mineral make-up!!Mineral make-up is the future. If u are using mineral CORRECTLY it is ravishing.I use IDBare Escentuals. I don’t itch.I also use the Bare
Escen Night Treatment and it has tightened my pores! Also use PUR. U people then have an ad here for Ambien to promote sleep!! I nearly died on those drugs!!So say you about credibility. Leave mineral make-up alone.
Anja Says:
So when do we actually get the reviews for these products??? i’d LOVE to get some make up soon, but there’s just so many! Some say use this one, some say that one. i’ve read some have things in it that make the skin itch or break out. i’m so confussed. i have very fair skin, with dark tan and orange splotches from lupus; which also makes my skin VERY sensitive. i also have huge pours and not sure how to shrink them; and combination skin at that. Which mineral make up will cover all of these things without making them even more noticable (like liquid foundation and regular powder did; i might as well have used a red marker and circled all the areas instead!), yet blend well, and be ok with my skin problems???? Should i just see a dermatologist? Anyone else have any of these problems and could recommend something? i don’t have the money to just experament. HELP!!! This is all so confusing.
Come on Girls, surely we can figure SOMETHING out!!! i don’t care what it is as long as it works well and doesn’t hurt my skin. So glad there are many of you out there, like me saying “HUH???” when it comes to all this! LOL
XXOO* ~to all.
Kerri Says:
Oh yeah, I’d also love more info on NVEY ECO makeup. Thanks!
sammy-kay Says:
I love my Bella pierre mineral make up. The stack of colours i bought can be used dry as eyeshadow or blush, and when you dip your brush in water it turns into a beautiful shimmering eye liner or eyeshadow. when i bought it the stand was also adding the colours to a clear lip balm, lip gloss and nail polish, which made it look so versatile. I wasn’t too sure on what was acutally in the balm, gloss and polish so i didnt gte them, but the 10 colours i did get work great!!!

I’d love to hear how AVON’s mineral makeup compares to the others. I’ve used Bare Minerals but never could get it to look good, now matter what I did. I’d like to try another but don’t want’ to waste any more money than I have to!
Thanks,

Kate P Says:
Hey Beauty Brainiacs! I was wondering if you guys could clarify a few things about mineral makeup for me:
-First off, they say that because MMU is all-natural, you can sleep in it and it won’t clog pores. When I heard that, my BS-o-meter went off – wouldn’t the oil on your face and the powder mix together and possibly clog pores?
-Second off, I use(d) Everyday Minerals for about 4 months and found that it made me seriously oily (WAY worse than normal) – are there ingredients in MMU that can make someone more oily? (for reference, I tried using different moisturizers, as well as no moisturizer and nothing made a difference)
-Lastly, I suspect that mineral makeup is making me break out really badly. What are some ingredients that could potentially be causing my breakouts (so I can try to avoid them in the future)?
You guys are awesome, and I’m hoping you can help decode mineral makeup for me!

I’ve tried California Beauty Sudden Glow and Youngblood, but I just can’t get past the shimmer. I’d like a more matte texture. I’ve also noticed a slight itch as someone above mentioned.
J Says:
I am interested in uncoated minerals. Silicones make me break out. Most mineral products have coated zinc or titanium. Coated = silicone, and for me, that means breakouts.
Miroki Says:
I’ve been researching into Elegant Minerals recently but I have not seen ANY reviews on it save for those on the site. Their materials are very similar to all other all natural mineral products (no bismuth, etc.) It’s much cheaper than the name/tv/infomercial brands since it doesn’t spend money on promotions. They have AMAZING sample special offers so I think I may give them a try. I’m only hesitating cause of discovering Silk Naturals, and I’m wondering if the inclusion of silk may be better for my skin…of course I realize I can buy silk powder separately too…
Heather Says:
I currently use BE. I have been hearing good things about Avon minerla makeup. I have found a website http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, they are part of the environmental working group. This website rates hazzardess igredients in products. I would like to know which mineral makeup is the best buy for pricing, coverage, correction or “healing”, and hazzard ratings. I would like a well rounded produst that is not tested on animals also. If there is such a product out there.

How about The Secret Mineral Cosmetics. I was in the mall the other night and had them use their foundation on me. It looked nice except where she tried to cover some acne and then it looked caked. The following morning my face was so dry in that area. Apparently you can use the face colors for all your make-up needs–blush, eyeliner, shadow, mascara, even nail polish. They have a primer to make it waterproof. I tried looking them up online–but found nothing

I’m interested in Everyday Minerals, it’s the only brand I’ve ever used and it’s fantastic as well as cheap, and that has me a bit confused. If it’s so great and doesn’t contain filler like they say, how can it be so affordable? I’m wondering if it’s not as pure as they say.
Also, I was curious which brands had Talc and if it was really as bad for you as I hear.
Marlena Burger Says:
OK…I see all the questions others have listed, where are the answers to these questions. Am I missing something?
TN Says:
I’ve been using Bare Escentuals Foundation with SPF 15. I like to know if this have enough sunblock for everyday. I like others to know if there is others brands that are just as good in coverage as this one since this is one of the pricier ones. I am thinking of buying the RareMinerals Blemish Therapy 2pc Kit since I do have adult acne.
Shaina Says:
I’ve used Aromaleigh for about six years and swear by it. My skin is extremely sensitive which is why I turned to mineral makeup in the first place, and I researched several companies before selecting Aromaleigh. I have incredibly sensitive, acne-prone skin, and this is the first line of makeup I’ve used (and I’m a beauty product junkie) that hasn’t created an allergic rash or acne breakout. The powders are talc- and bismuth oxychloride-free, and only “moist” products like some stick eyeliners and mascara contain chemicals like preservatives and fillers (a few of the moist products do contain talc, but they’re items that are used in small amounts like concealer and lash primer). Ingredients are stated clearly. My experience with color consistency has been different than a previous poster: I repurchase the foundation once per year and the color hasn’t fluctuated. The makeup stays put all day and in any weather – in fact, my makeup still looked fresh after a 14-hour excursion to Disneyland last week; also, I live on the coast where it’s humid year-round. Surprisingly, it also lasts through workouts. The makeup feels great on the skin, lightweight and never sticky or uncomfortable; because it doesn’t clog pores, it also lets skin “breathe.” Application is easy and quick and heavier or lighter coverage can be achieved simply by using different tools. The variety of colors is huge and continuously growing, and there are foundation shades for all skin tones and ethnicities. For those who are in between offered shades, extensive guidelines for mixing two or more shades to get the right color are given on the website. You can buy generous, inexpensive samples of every item before committing to purchasing full-size items (also a great way to try mixing colors if you need to). The full-sized items are huge, also inexpensive and last a long time. Finally, Aromaleigh has great customer service. Orders ship quickly and the prices are very reasonable, and coupons, sales, and free shipping are available. The creator of Aromaleigh cares about and listens to her customers, and some of the reformulations of products and new items and colors have been a direct response to customer’s requests. I apologize for the long post and sounding like a late-night infomercial, but I love this stuff so much that I wanted to give detailed information!
Shaina Says:
Just a quick Aromaleigh follow-up I didn’t mention above: customer reviews of each product are available and encouraged on the website. To J, both uncoated and coated formulations of the foundation powder are available. To Marlena, L’oreal doesn’t offer bona fide mineral makeup products – their products have added ingredients, like talc and aloe, whereas the “true” mineral makeup companies formulate their powders completely of minerals like titanium dioxide and finely milled mica. My 53-year-old mother uses mineral makeup (Aromaleigh and occasionally Bare Escentuals), and she loves it and looks fabulous!
Marlena Burger Says:
Thank you Shaina for this informative right-up and your extensive research on the subject. Marlena

I forgot to add La Bella Donna to my list. If I’m not mistaken this was one of the very first–if not The First–mineral makeups to arrive on the scene, probably at least ten years ago. In NYC I remember it was initially an exclusive at Takashimaya and then moved over to Bergdorf’s. Apparently it’s now only available online. It comes in loose and pressed forms, which some folks find especially convenient.

How about Mary Kay’s new mineral line?
* foundation
* eye & cheek colors
* highlighting & bronzing powders

I tried BareMinerals for a long time, too, and the MK mineral foundation gives me an airbrushed look without having to mix (ugh) or do four different steps. I use 3 or 4 light layers to cover my redness. The other stuff just came out.

the thing about mineral make-up that i hate is ITS SHINNY!!! MINERALS ARE SHINNY! it might be OIL FREE but there is a “GLOW” to it and i want a MATTE Look..IS there a mineral make up that gives a MATTE look?
Alex Says:
I hope I’m not too late for this! I do use bare escentuals–it’s the only time I’ve been able to wear make up that doesn’t make me break out in a sweat. But what I’m really interested in knowing more about is Colorescience–a mineral-based powdered sunscreen (also doesn’t make my face sweat). But I’m wondering how well it provides coverage and protection!

Id love to know if anyone has ever tried Gourmet Body Treats stuff (ww.gourmetbodytreats.com). They have one of the lowest ratings for hazardous ingredients on http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com. I’ve been trying to find a nice natural makeup…something animal friendly and not filled with bad stuff.
I did (and still have, but am trying not to use) BareMinerals. It worked okay for me, but did make my face itchy at times. Then I read about it containing bismuth and nanoparticles and decided it might be worth it to find something a bit safer.
Amandolin Says:
I want to know about e.i.f.’s new mineral makeup. They are giving away a starter package for $20 right now. They don’t have parabens, but as I’ve been reading and have confidence in for myself, it doesn’t concern me that much. I would like to know how well it works compared to BE.

I have tried a few different brands. Jennifer Flavin-Stallones Serious Skin Care ProMinerals which is found on HSN and her Seriesse Skin line are pretty much one and the same. After also trying Bare Escentuals, & Bare Minerals I definitely prefer the ProMinerals and Seriesse…They offer the best coverage. Could you research all of those brands?

Mineral makeup has worsened my skin in every way: whiteheads, blackheads, overall acne, dryness, you name it. I started out with BE, and this stuff seemed to ruin my skin slowly over time. I then switched to Signature minerals, then Suncat, but skin problems haven’t let up.
I know I had a problem with bismuth, but I am definitely also having a problem with mica, and possibly even titanium dioxide.
I just purchased samples from Beauty Bliss ( mica free) and Rejuva minerals (mica and titanium dioxide free), and am hoping these work out.
Please put these companies in your review. Thank you so much!

skeptical hairdresser Says:
how do we know it isn’t the bare vitamins stuff that they tell us to use first that isn’t causing the problems? It made my skin feel bad so I stopped using it and just use the powder. I’ve been using bare escentuals for about a year and am thrilled. I am almost 52, and my skin is ok. just a bit wrinkled. I never smoked so it isn’t too bad. I do NOT use the bare vitamins stuff, Just a very light coating of vasaline while my face is still wet and moist from the shower, then I use the little concealer brush and put medium beige on my nose, chin and cheeks near the bridge of my nose. All the places that my roseacia shows. then I use a little warmth for a blush, or any other blush in my drawer that i spent too much on and shoved aside. Not too pink, because I think it makes old skin look too swollen. thats why I like warmth. Just a bit, and that’s it. No mineral veil, or bare vitamins or anything like that. Just vasaline, the foundation, and warmth. and a bit of eye liner. coverage is great, and it feels like nothing is on my face.
Mary Says:
I rarely use foundation, but I like Bare Minerals when I do. It seems to even out skin tone and, as long as it is applied lightly, looks as if you’re not wearing makeup. I don’t really know about the “better for your skin” claims, though. Since it seems to be just powdered pigment I suppose there’s less for bacteria to grow in, so it might be. For a mineral eye-shadow, though, I prefer Ulta’s house line. Much cheaper than other brands and yet good color and coverage.

I found bare escentuals 2 years ago and have been in love with it ever since… there are a few flaws with it.. but there are flaws with EVERY makeup type. I find that it is light and airy which makes you feel like you dont have anything on your face. Id recommend using a moisterizer under it if you have dryer skin. The only thing that i dislike about this product is that it is not waterproof.. at all. I mean.. i cried a couple of tears at my brothers wedding and you could see where the water touched the skin.. maybe theres a solution for that

Everyday Minerals is my favorite. I have tried BE and do not like the color selection. Signature minerals and MAD are good too. For six years I used Aromaleigh — the shipping is fantastic and colors pretty good. But the return policy is, well, there isn’t one. And, if you provide customer reviews or participate in the blog, don’t make any negative comments or they will be deleted and you will be locked out and cannot order from her anymore.
Andrea Says:
Hey Sandy, the same thing happened to me at Aromaleigh! I only commented once in the YEARS I used her products and now have been denied access. She actually deletes all negative comments on the forum. So maybe I sound disgruntled, but I disagree with Shaina, the owner does is very sensitive and easily offended. I’m on the site trying to find an alternative to Aromaleigh. I think I’ll try Everyday Minerals based on the good reviews.

I never wear foundation, and only sheer powder on special occasions…I have medium brown skin with more yellow and a bit of red, undertones. After a facial/enzyme peel…I needed something “safe” to cover the slight peeling/redness for an important function, so I started shopping for mineral makeup…After being sent to Laura Mercier(who claimed not to have anything dark enough for me) and bare ecentuals (powdered me down with ashy too lite tones for 1/2 hr. before the came to the same conclusion) I ended up buying MAC’s new mineralize powder …I’ve been using it (with my medicated cream and moisturizer/sunblock beneath it, and I LOVE the color and sheer coverage! It is a great match! They werent too sure as to the percentage of minerals in the makeup…Could you get more info on MAC mineralize, and any purer/better mineral makeup for brown skin?

Just purchased samples of Signature Minerals. The samples were generous delivered in 3- days. 5 little pots from light to dark in your choice of colors included blusher and a translucent plus a mini ziplock of eyeshadow. Being a first time user of mineral makeup I applied to much. Second day I went light on it. It went on fine with a matte finish, you have a choice. The only drawback for me was the finish did not look or feel velvety like my liquid makeup I had been using. Next day I used my liquid makeup which I really like, believe it or not from MABELINE,called Instant Age Re-Wind(I swear they use the L’Oreal Visable Lift product with Mabeline label.)I used the Signature Minerals translucent over to set it to a matt finish. It lasted all day, very little shine by the end of the day. Still would like to find one that is velvety, matte finish and decent coverage in a sample size and I might go with the mineral make. But I am not sold on the mineral type makeups yet. Thank You.

Anyway, very curious to see the results of this project – the number of mineral make-ups available now is staggering!

I’m delighted you’re tackling this subject? I’ve been increasingly curious about mineral-powder foundations, but I’ve wondered:
- will it work for someone who wants light coverage? I’ve seen a few clips from infomercials, and they all show how to apply quite heavy coverage. Very effective, but not my style.
- is there a trick to applying it smoothly?
- does it require a specialized brush? Does the material matter, i.e., animal bristles or manmade bristles?
- will the powder emphasize the imperfections of older skin?
I’m especially interested in Everyday Minerals because they offer such a wide range of shades, but I also found the wide range a little confounding. Any tips on choosing the right shade from their tiny palettes, given the wide varieations in computer monitors?

I thought Bare Minerals (Bare Escentuals) was the original and all the others were copied after that formula. Bare minerals is quality, and has done my skin good. Less breakouts, etc. But you HAVE to go SPARINGLY with the stuff or it will look cakey. Sparingly is all you need, if you use spot cover underneath(the bisque). I use the rare minerals (which I got on ebay at a discount) sometimes in the summer without makeup. I like it on my body rather than on my face. Go figure!

With so many companies hopping on the minerals bandwagon, it’s hard to know just which ones are truly “all natural.” Most recently, I’ve used Bare Escentuals, but got tired of having to use Mineral Veil to cut down the shine. Two steps is one too many. Philosophy’s loose mineral product probably isn’t all natural but I’d like to know how it stacks up against all of those products that claim to be all natural but have some dubious and/or unnecessary fillers. Thanks!

I wanted to know which brands of mineral makeup contain bismuth oxychloride ,which tends to make the skin itch ( especially in warm weather!). I worked briefly for the company Afterglow cosmetics (www.afterglowcosmetics.com) and they do not have bismuth oxychloride and is claimed to use certified organic ingredients such as grapeseed. I really enjoyed their line ( foundations go on creamy and do not look dry) as well as their wide variety of colors with yellow undertones ( as opposed to bare escentuals that tend to have more red undertones – has anyone seen the warmth and the deep shades?)but I wanted to know if there was other brands out there similar or better. I also wanted to know more about the different brushes. Each line has different types of hairs which claim to pick up the powders better but to be quite honest I feel that its not really the hairs but the packing of the brushes that gives the right application. For example, the kabuki brush from bare escentuals has sable hairs that are packed tightly together to give full coverage, but if you were to use say, Sephora’s, Nars,Smashbox’s bronzer brush you would get pretty much the same coverage. Also, does it matter if the hairs are natural or synthetic. I know that synthetic hairs tend to be better for creams or liquids but for those who prefer a vegan approach I was wondering if there were any good lines that don’t use hairs from animals ( Besides, afterglow cosmetics which use taklon). Well I think I’ve rambled enough. Thank you.

Hi,
I’ve heard about Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30 but I’m not sure how effective this is as a sunblock?
If it’s mineral won’t it come off really easily? I currently use Avene tinted compact sunblock with an SPF of 50 but I have a feeling its going to be very heavy in the summer.
Bay Area Says:
I want to thank you for doing such a in-depth investigation. I am looking very forward to it. I am hoping to see a table that compares prices, spf, purity (no additives,no talc, or that stuff that people say makes them itch), coverage (how well it covers, matte/sparkly),an overall rating.
I would also like to know the definitions of mineral vocab, important ingredients that we should look out for whether good or bad for skin. Also, does it matter what brand of brush we use. If we buy mineral makeup from a certain company do we have to buy their brushes. Also, I bought the Rare Minerals renew and reveal facial cleanser from Bare Escentuals. Its a powder. I would like to know if there is really any benefit from using this specific cleanse. I also bought the Rare Minerals skin revival treatment (night)and the Rare Minerals acne treatment from BE are they really beneficial to my skin? Does the night treatment really work? What about the acne treatment? Thank you so much!

What about Sheer cover? How does it stack up to the other brands. I find that it does not cover as well as they advertise. Is it worth the increased price over Revlon/Maybelline/L’oreal mineral powder foundations?
Stevie Says:
I’ve used two types of mineral make-up (NAO – Never Accept Ordinary and Artistry Essentials) and have liked them a lot. I would definitely like more info on it such as coverage, how good it really is for your skin, skin protection, so on and so forth.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I am sold on Mineral Essence. I’ve tried them all. Avon is horrid !. I am a derm patient for rosacea and skin cancer. I love Mineral Essence. Coverage ! The moment of truth came when my dermatologist said “What ever you are doing, keep doing it!” When I told him what I was using he encouraged that all woman should use 100% mineral makeup.

I would like to know more about the Shaklee brand named Minerelles. I like them a lot but would be curious to know how you find them in testing.
Alexis Says:
I would just love a recommendation. I would like to know what mineral foudation can actually (realistically) do for skin, and if you ahve fairly normal / dry skin which brand would be best. Also, is talc bad in foundation? I have no idea! Thanks xxx
Bren Says:
I use Isadora mineral foundation, blush, eyeshadows and compact powder. My usually sensitive skin has shown no adverse reactions, which is great. Following the hype around nano-particle size I did email them one day, enquiring about the particle size in their products, receiving no reply whatsoever. So even though my experience with the stuff is good, that doesn’t exactly encourage my loyalty to Isadora as a brand.
Martine Says:
I have been using various differnt brands of mineral over the past few years and by far have found Susan Posnick Mineral Make-up to be of the highest quality. My skin has improved dramatically, it contains an SPF 26 and comes in a refillable self dispensing brush, unlike others which spill every where. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Ying Says:
I’ve used BE and it’s pretty good so far, but the only problem I have with it is it does rub off, and you see it especially if you wear white.
I’m interested in Lotus Minerlas, which I’ve heard great reviews about, plus they give you free samples before you buy! I’m going to give that a try.

I really like Milani’s mineral foundation even though the packaging and brush are absolutely horrible. It’s SOOOO much better than the Neutrogena one I tried, which was more like a pressed powder. The Milani one (which is cheap, too!) goes on and looks great.
Ann Jones Says:
I love my Mary Kay Mineral Powder Foundation….flawless, natural look and ease of application! And the mineral eye and cheek colors, mineral highlighters and mineral bronzers are wonderful!!! Mary Kay has my vote!

In case these haven’t been mentioned already, I’d like to hear your opinion of the mineral foundations offered by Meow Cosmetics and Lauren Hutton.
Thanks!

I tried Bare Minerals and it made my face very oily. After trying different types of products from Bare Minerals to try to correct the problem, I ended up shipping back the product for a full refund. I went back to Physicians Formula, which I love.

I’ve used Neutrogena and while it was okay on my skin – it didn’t last. My oily skin as with other foundations would wipe off with a touch of my finger. In my 40s with redness on my cheeks, was hoping to find something to last 8 hours at least.
Have been hopping sites and found everyone’s comments very useful. But no one mentioned E.L.F. (Eyes Lips Face) which compares itself to high end cosmetics and is available online. I have seen it mentioned in many magazine beauty editor articles.
Bascially, looking forward to reading what you guys come up with and thank you!
Bonnie Says:
Thank you, Thank you for doing something on mineral makeup. I love mineral makup but I wonder if the claims are true. I’ve used Bare Escentials and Sheer Cover, Avon, and there’s a few over the counter ones too. So far I like Bare Escentials best, but it is so expensive that now I am using Avon. It’s ok, just a little grainy, not as smooth as the other brands.
I feel I need more information on the subject and more alternatives. Please include these products in your report.
Thank you, Bonnie

So far I’ve tried Revlon Mineral Foundation, Everyday Minerals in Cool-Fair Original Glo and Cool-Fair Semi-Matte (the semi-matte caused me to break out which surprised me), and Buff-Ivory Original Glo. I’ve ordered Inquisitive Chausie in Purrrfect Puss from Meow Cosmetics to try it out. I also just ordered samples of AromaLeigh Mineral Makeup in Alabaster Glissade (G-00) and Ivory Glissade (G-1CL). I’d love to see you review Meow Cosmetics, AromaLeigh Cosmetics and Everyday Minerals.

I had been using BE for about 5 years when I found Dash Minerals. I compared the quality and the price, and I became such a believer in the purity and quality of Dash, that I became a consultant for them. Dash Minerals do not contain parabens or bismuth oxychloride. My 16 year old daughter’s face cleared up within a month. Icing on the cake is that Dash is less than 1/2 the price of BE, and even less than most drug store brands while selling a top quality product. Really… give Dash a try.
Aeona Heart Says:
I love Skinfully Bare Minerals! They really care about what goes into their products. They also have stuff on their site all about the facts that other companies dont want you to know about. I believe them when they say their makeup is healthy for you. I got the foundation & it’s only got 4 ingredients in it! It covers everything so I don’t need concealer now. It’s really cheap to buy so you can get more than you do of other brands.

Bare Escentuals
This is the only makeup I use now. I am almost 50 years old and I finally have makeup that I like!
Rebecca Says:
My favorite foundation, concealer and blush is Everyday Minerals. I’m new to mineral makeup and just fell in love with EDM. I like maximum matte coverage and never thought a mineral makeup would work. I was wrong. I haven’t liked my makeup so much in 15 years. I love EDM for their product and price!
I also sampled Ocean Mist, Meow Cosmetics, Bare Escentuals and Avon’s new line. Ocean Mist is a close second on product and price to EDM. I LOVE Ocean Mist’s Silken Perfection. It is comparable to BE’s mineral veil, but I think it is finer — also better priced. BE was too shiny for me and accentuated my flaws. My Meow samples were all too grey, but they have many shades, so it isn’t necessarily their fault. I did like their texture and matteness. I also got some great samples of eyeshadows from Meow. I’m definately a fan of Meow. Avon’s foundation did not seem as fine and had a talc smell to it. Seemed subpar to me, but not awful. Avon’s mineral blush and eyeshadows were okay as well at a decent price.
Rebecca Says:
I wanted to add that I didn’t realize what liquid foundation was doing to my skin. In 3 weeks of using Everyday Minerals, my skin is less oily, haven’t had a real blemish, less blackheads and my pores are reduced. I wish I’d turned to mineral makeups a long time ago.
Nena Says:
I was wondering if you could include Bella Pierre mineral makeup in your review. Thankyou!
Lin Says:
Lily Lolo is currently my favourite brand of mineral makeup and I’m interested in reading rewiews/info about it, compared to other brands.
I have also tried Bare Escentuals but I find it too “sparkly” for use outdoors in the sunlight. It looks good in artificial light though, so now I use Bare Escentuals when i go out nighttime and Lily Lolo for a radiant natural daytime look.
I only apply a small amount of mineral foundation because I want a natural looking result, will it still act as a sunscreen (spf15) or does that require a thick layer of foundation?
Risa Says:
Since everyone says theirs is the best, I’m curious to know about Jane Iredale (I know makeup artists that swear by it) but even more about Minerologie. JI is the most expensive, but it seems that once you cross that line of those who leave out the ‘crap’ and get into the more carefully created brands, the price goes up but they are within a few dollars of each other. So, I am just interested in knowing what’s worth it and what isn’t. Thanks!
Jennifer Says:
I’ve tried Jane Iredale, Bare Minerals and Larenim. JI is quite expensive, but I loved the color match. BM worked just as well, little less expensive, but I had to purchase 2 colors to blend for the perfect color match. Larenim does not contain bismuth, which is why I tried it. Unfortunately, the coverage was very minimal. The girl at the makeup counter at Whole Foods where I purchased it told me that this was due to not having bismuth (which gives it better adherence to your skin). Of all these, I preferred JI. I first used JI because I have melasma and the coverage was great and very natural.
Amy Says:
Here’s another vote for an Aromaleigh review. I love their extensive list of foundation options, though I know they tend towards the paler colors. I also like the Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic products, though I know think they are admittedly non as “pure” a mineral make up in order to get the great pigments.
Monave is another line I’d like to hear about, as it’s local to me. I tried it and found it to be a bit drying (I have oily but flaky skin) but they have a great line of colors, for darker skin too.

I’ve been using BE but am concerned with the bismuth, titaium dioxide and iron oxides. BE Mineral Veil is corn starch, expensive (could have used what I had in the kitchen) and makes me itch when I perspire on my face (hot flashes). Ordered samples of Alima Cosmetics and Earth’s Beauty. Q: Does arrowroot and cornsilk give much coverage? Are cornsilk and cornstarch the same ingredient? Thanks for your help… Trish

Melaleuca recently came out with Mineral makeup products under the Nicole Miller brand. Do you have any insight on those? Thanks!
DT Says:
I have been using Jane Iredale and I do like it! I have been told most (if not all) of the OTC brands in dept. and drug stores are just “regular ingredients” with a touch of minerals added. That is very deceiving! I am a breast cancer survivor and am VERY aware of ingredients and I avoid all parabens and mineral oil as well as most ingredients I cannot pronounce. A very good book that lists ingredients and their side effects is: A Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients by Ruth Winter – very eye opening!!
Silvija Says:
I have been given a tester for PurePressed – Jane Iredale last week but I am not sure about it. I have oily, sensitive, dry skin so am interested which mineral make up is good for “problematic skin”. I have also heard about Lily Lilo (UK brand)so I have ordered some testers as their products calim to have less ingridients than Jane Iredale.
Cary Says:
I started out using Bare Escentuals (sp) and have also tried Isadora, Jane and Glo Minerals. Now I’m back to using B.E. I liked Gl because of the compact but overall like B. E. colors and coverage best. I’m very interested to know how mineral make-up fares in general and how different brands compare ingredient-wise and quality-wise. Also would like to know who has the “best” pencil eye-liner and shadows.
Jenn Says:
i am interested in any good covering make up product that does not contain any amount of titanium dioxide, my husband is highly allergic. titanium dioxide is a commonly used agent for just about anything (medicine, soap, toothpaste, newspaper print) so it is hard to find anything without this product.

I’m curious about neutrogena mineral makeup. I love it, it has great coverage, and the makeup gets loaded through the brush – big time saver. I use the foundation and blush.
Cindy Says:
I really like T LeClerc loose powder. The coverage is great and got lots of attention in the beauty mags a few years ago. Its good stuff. I’m wondering about the mineral ingredients. It is made with rice starch and I believe has zinc… is that bad or good?

I’ve been using LA Minerals Hollywood foundation for a month now. It’s great!

I would love to hear about Garden Botanika; I recently switched over to their Skin Perfecting Loose Powder in place of the B.E. Mineral Veil, in the hopes that it would be better for my face. I still use Bare Minerals for the base but would love to find one that is good for my skin condition. I have seborrheic dermatitis so this is not easy to cover at times.

I was persuaded to buy “Beauty Glow” by DWC Skincare UK while in the shopping mall last week. It claims to be a mineral makeup and seems to live up to its promise of good coverage and the ‘glow’!! My skin was ruined by the bismuth oxychloride in BE and GLO Minerals and JI before they removed the bismuth.
I have been using JI liquid which I really like but I have oily skin and prefer a powder.
I live overseas now and I research MM constantly. Almost everything is mail order, getting a sample is as expensive as buying the whole thing.
On a recent trip to the States I grabbed some Bella Terra in the mall because it did not have bismuth.
So far I like it. My skin likes it anyway. The brushes are great quality and reasonable in price. The make up itself is OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE! The quality is not proven any higher than any other MM without bismuth.
I am not sure I agree with the company’s interests. I agree with helping immigrants, bringing “cosmetic specialists” over to “run” your business, yeah right.
I am interested in knowing more about:
Terra Bella – why they are $69.99?
Alima
Lily Lolo
Everyday Minerals
Jane Iredale – present reformulations
Peter Thomas Roth Mineral Suncreen (which I have been wearing over my JI liquid and am really liking the results)
Rejuva – who emailed me and said they do not micronize the boron nitride or anything else in their formulas.
I would also like to know the difference between micronization and triple milled.
Can you also clarify any other terminology that might be confusing?
I would like to know ingredients, what they do, potential reactions to these ingredients and potential long term effects they have on the skin.
Why is bismuth oxychloride allowed in something that would go on your face?
Does titanium dioxide cause all the evil to pores people are freaking out over?
With everything I wear I like to know its background as well. Are the production surroundings hygenic?
Does the company support terrorism or child endangerment?
This is what I have so far.
I am glad this study is being conducted!

HI, I desperatley need YOU to take a look at and give reviwes on Everyday Minerals, Bare Escentuals and Jane Iredal. I want to know if mother nature’s minerals are better for my face then pure synthetics that should be rid of any toxics. I don’t see minerals being rid of their toxic capabilities since they’re untouched, not messed with at all really, in mineral make up. Are minerals that toxic to begin with? Or is it enough just stayign away from the irritating MIca and Bismuth? This is a great bundle of reviews you will be doing, hope they’re done quite thouroghly cause on the internet everyone is saying different things – I’d really (rather) only take YOUR word for it. THanks guys, looking fwd 2 it.

I have tried Jane Iredale and I ended with acne and very dry and uncomfortable sking which is something considering my skin is combination/oily. I have also recently tired Lily Lolo which was very good and my shine started to disappear which has never happened before. But then (after about a week or so) my skin started feeling very tight and uncomfortable. Has anyone else had the same problem?
Liv Says:
I love the idea of mineral makeup – so pure you could sleep in it, built in SPF; what’s not to like? My skin has been irascible since my early teens. Although these days it shows strong signs of finally behaving, the wrong product can quickly cause an old-school tantrum. My best friend loved Bare Escentuals and gave me a trial pack as a Maid of Honor gift, claiming that it had changed her life and hoped it would do the same for me. Unfortunately, I noticed that every time I used it, I suffered a red, swollen breakout. Also, despite how I swirled, tapped and buffed I just could not get it to look natural. I guiltily abandoned BE and didn’t try minerals again until this January, when I picked up a canister of the Almay offering. Mineral propaganda had influenced me and as I wasn’t willing to shell out mega bucks for a potentially offensive product, I turned to the drugstore. The Almay had seemed the less offensive of all the drugstore products; fewer ingredients and no mica, for starters. I got a much more natural look with the Almay but, unfortunately, noticed that it made me break out, too. Guess some mineral products are only for gals with good skin, even if the products are aimed at women with less than perfect complexions.

I’d be interested in seeing reviews of Jane Iredale and Meow Cosmetics mineral makeups.

Ooooh, I have one, a real good one. Can you please find one that DOES NOT contain any Zinc Oxide (at the least in their foundation)? As I’m using skin care products with copper peptides/GHK/SCRPs from Dr Pickarts skincare range and have been advised to not use products containing Zinc Oxides. Just, please if you could find some Companies that don’t put Zinc Oxide in their (foundation) products (instead of contradictory advice to what Dr Pickart said, it’s his range, his advice). I cannot tell you how great all of us who use his skincare products would feel. So many of us stopped using mineral make up because it contained Zinc oxide in them… and mineral make up is the BEST, ain’t it?! Thanks a bunch.

I would like to know your thoughts on Arbonne International’s Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 15. Even at retail price it is very affordable and the product lasts a long time. I love it, and have had fabulous results with it (no breakouts at all, lots of compliments on my skin and a very natural look) but I would like your objective review and opinion. It’s only available on http://arbonne.com through a consultant. Truth be told, I am an Arbonne Independent Consultant, but I would greatly appreciate your objective feedback. I love Jane Iredale. The whole line! I have worn Amber liquid and pressed powder, and even tried Warm Sienna and Riviera for a change. The sun protection is amazing! My fair skin is protected just wearing this makeup. But I, erh, need to find a more afordable makeup. . . bummer it’s so expensive, but worth it if you can budget it!
Kristin Says:
It’s been over a year that I’ve used Jane Iredale. My husband throws a fit anytime I mention finding a cheeper makeup, because this has been the best for my acne-prone, red, oily skin! I forgot to mention before, they have a traslucent matte powder for touchups during the day. It’s great! One of my necessities!

I have never used mineral make up, but am interested in bare escentuals. I would like to know where the “virgin soil” they harvest the minerals from is located. It it environmentaly conscience?
Liz Says:
I’ve used Bare Minerals for years happily but would like to know about:
1.a) Aloette (claims they were the ‘first’)
b) Maybelen Mineral Power (the translucent powder’s first ingredient is GLASS–does that count as a mineral AT ALL?)
2.a) Could you define ‘mineral’ in the makeup?
b) Could you rate all products by % of minerals?
c) Test if powder or liquid is better medium for mineral content?
shimmy Says:
Hi I recently noticed brands like neutrogena and maybeline are launching mineral make up, I want to know two things is there potential bad effects from this type of make up, and is there a big difference from drug store brands and higher end brands?

I use L’Oreal Bare Naturale in the winter after my tan’s faded, more because their lightest shade fits me perfectly than because I believe in the power of minerals. Lots of people seem to hate it, but I think they may just be using it wrong; it’s very easy to apply too much, and then it looks awful.
Jen Says:
Is it bad to inhale mineral makeup? Esp micronized minerals?
Gennifer Terrico Says:
I used Earthliscentuals mineral makeup from a company called Earthly Body and I thought it was the best ever. I always wanted to use mineral based because they felt more natural, but I still like thw way my older products felt more moisturizing. Earthliscentuals is like Bare Minterals but more moisturizing. They say that it’s because of hemp oil. They don’t have a large number of foundations, but I found one to match my skin perfect.

I love the Earthliscentuals line so much that I’m carrying it (I have a novelties business doing home parties, but also do Spa Parties, and mail-order). The moisturizing benefits of the hemp make my skin feel great. I’ve listed the basic ingredients for all of the products, and carry the starter kits which include the basic brushes. I am looking at adding a second line of mineral makeup, to cover the darker shades, and get mineral eyeshadows / lipgloss. Please drop me a note if you have any questions, alright?

Agnes Says:
I used Bare Minerals for about 2 years with no problems, and I was happy that it didn’t slide right off my oily complexion on humid summer days. Then I ran out and bought a new supply. I don’t use make-up daily, so it was about 3 weeks before I opened the new jar. I was going to a company Christmas party given by my husband’s employer. It looked great, as usual, when first applied. We got in the car and about 20 minutes later, my face felt hot and itchy, but didn’t look any different. By the time we arrived, it had gotten so bad, I ran to the ladies room to wash it off. The stinging and redness lasted all night. I don’t have to tell you how glamorous I looked. Next morning, my forehead, chin, and nose were covered with nasty, tiny red pimples. It took a month to clear up. I assumed it was the make-up. I figured they must have changed the formula. I went looking for another mineral foundation and tried Alima, Everyday Minerals, Physician’s Formula. None gave me the coverage that Bare Minerals had. Alima left me with a Kabuki-like mask effect no matter how much I used. Everyday Minerals has a huge selection of colors, which is nice, but could take you forever to find the right one. They do give generous samples, though. My gripe is that although ounce for ounce it is cheaper than Bare Minerals, you need to use quite a lot of it. It was OK, but not great coverage. Physician’s Formula’s packaging is inconvenient and comes with a cheap, useless application brush. But I have a good one, which I used to apply it. Not impressed. Colors are a little orangey, and it cakes up and falls off. Tired of the mail order make-up oddysey, I decided to try the Bare Minerals again (on a day when I had no particular place to go…) And it was fine! Tried it again the next day…..Fine AGAIN! I’ve been using it again now for about 6 weeks without a repeat of the problem. I only use foundation about 4 times a week, so a jar of Bare Minerals lasts me nearly a year! So while it does cost more than others, I still think it’s a bargain. That’s why I don’t get that TV promotion they’re always having on QVC where they want you to sign up for some service that will ship you a new supply every 60 days! I guess if you used it all over your body, you might need it that often. Otherwise….NOT. One drawback of the line is that there is a limited selection of colors. And that all over cover/blush product called Warmth? Not flattering. At least on me. According to the company lit., it’s “appropriate for all skin tones”. Not so much. If you’ve got a darker or coppery skin tone, it would probably be great. But no matter how little I use, the effect is clown-like. I’d be willing to experiment more with other products if I could get them at a retail outlet where I can see the colors myself, and try them on. Computer monitors are not as accurate as the human eye, and it won’t tell you how it will look on you. Why do so many of these companies only sell via the web?
HorseLady Says:
I just started Bare Essentials as my 1st foray into the Mineral world and I so experience some itching. My T zone pores look big enough to drive a truck thru when it’s off. I need to be careful not too put on too much to avoid cakey creases.Still practicing. I see web adds for Raw Minerals. I see Avon has products and now I believe Melaleuca is starting a line. I can’t afford to try all that’s out there so I would owe my Beautiful, Brainy Mentors a dept of graditude if they could be the Cosmetic consumer reporters on all this mineral madness. I do know that this is the first foundation thats ever touched my 45 year old face and it beats not having any foundation. I want to use the best for my $$$$.
Liz Says:
I use and love Bare Essentials all over face colors. It really brightens my face. I also use their Well-Rested which is a brightener to make you look well-rested! It works great. I recently started selling Avon and noticed that their mineral make-up is a lot cheaper, so I tried it. The colors are fabulous, the packaging is not as convenient as Bare Essentials, but for the price difference you can learn to work with it. Mineral make-up does take a little getting use to. Time and careful handling is the key. It is hard to blow thru putting on your make-up when you use mineral make-up. If you spill it you could lose a lot of it.

I used ID Bare Escentuals but it had a very shiny finish and after a few weeks my skin broke out in loads of small red spots. I blamed the bismuth oxychloride.
I now use Lily Lolo, which is amazing. It has cleared up my adult acne and stopped my skin being so oily. It has a really natural finish and is easy to apply.
Silvija said Lily Lolo made her skin dry. I have found that using an anti aging moisturiser once a day solves this. Lily Lolo is to me the best, and n=high street brands seem to contain many more ingredients including Talc. I’d like to know if all the preservatives and fillers can clog the pores and cause spots.

I find it hard to believe that no one has mentioned Mirabella. I’ve found it to be the best.

scatterbrain Says:
Dear Lobes,
The only mineral makeup I’ve ever used comes from EccoBella. I use their mineral pressed powder with flower waxes. http://eccobella.com/
It’s talc free and the flower waxes appear to keep it from “creasing” in those pesky crows feet around my eyes. Plus it feels really nice on my face. I’ve also found it effective for making my skin tone look really even without looking and feeling “overly done”. It’s also cruelty free, etc. for those that are concerned with environmental ethics. In fact, an analysis of their mineral makeup should be right up your alley because their tagline is “Intelligent Beauty”
Of course, never having used another product, I have nothing to compare it to, so adding it to your list would be awesome.
Julia Says:
I’d love to see a review of Glo Minerals.
Elizabeth Says:
my favorite cosmetics brand is neutrogena i thinks its the best so i bought the mineral foundation just to try it and i love it, it looks so natural
nay Says:
I also would like to knowabout ID Bare Escentuals, i notice if i get hot or in the sun, or sweat, my face begins to itch or sting. and doesn’t cover up my rosacea or blemishes, but thought it was just me not having the right shade
pam Says:
Please look at Laura Mercier mineral foundation and primer. I LOVE the primer and on days off will just use a little concealer followed by the primer. The foundation is great for me, very good color and goes on very light but with good coverage. Compared to Bare Minerals, the LM product looks much more natural.
Shalom Says:
Please include Bella Pierre Cosmetics in your research. (I believe that Bella Terra is the same product, just somebody purchased the right to put their own name on it.)
I know it doesn’t contain anything but Mica, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Serious. That’s it. I haven’t tried a lot of mineral makeup, but I love this one. (Didn’t like Sheer Cover – heavy. Bare Minerals also heavy- plus they have about a half dozen products all considered part of the foundation. Drugstore variety, Saavy – plain yucky.) Very concentrated, you need very little to get great coverage. Up front it’s expensive, but since it lasts anywhere from 12-14 months for an average user, it’s not really that expensive. Because it doesn’t add anything else in there but the minerals, even things good for your skin, it has an indefinite shelf-life. Other mineral makeup that may be great, will “go bad” after a certain amount of time because of those other ingredients (leaf extracts, emollients, flower wax, etc.).
Anything with Bismuth Oxychloride is always going to be heavier on your face even if you don’t have an allergic reaction to it. Bismuth is number 83 on the periodic table (very heavy metal) and the kind they use in makeup is actually a byproduct of lead and copper refining – it’s also chemically related to arsenic which is a poison. I’m not an expert, but this is what my own little research project has uncovered.
Can’t wait to see the results.
Asma Says:
I have recently started using Sheer Cover. After a long time, a foundation had suited my skin type. I am allergic to any “spf” product, but this one suits me! Why? Are all the ingredients in Sheer Cover “good” for skin?
Meranda Says:
I really want to know if Sheer Cover is what they say it is? Is it really as beneficial and natural as they say? Or, am I just wasting away my money?
Rozan Says:
Has anybody tried Alchemist’s Apprentice mineral make-up? It’s bismuth-free but that’s about all I know about it.
Also, how important is the type of brush used to apply the powder? Are there any quality brushes out there that don’t cost an arm and a leg?
Radiant Rox Says:
Arbonne has a ton of amazing products and there’s a high-quality mineral powder foundation that I use. It has an SPF of 15; it’s water-resistant and stays on really well. It comes with a nice brush to “scrub” it on. What I love most of all is that it’s healthy … and gives my face such a “natural-looking finish.” There are 15 shades, which you can see at arbonrox.myarbonne.com – at the Shop Online tab.

Judy Says:
I had trouble with my skin for years and finally started using Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics about 5 years ago and ever since, my skind has looked great and people compliment me on my complexion and I’m 67.
After all of the advertising for Bare Escentuals, I was curious, especially since it appears to be less expensive, but if you look at the net quantity in the package of Bare Escentuals vs the net quantity in the Jane Iredale compressed powder foundation, which I use, the Jane Iredale actually comes out MUCH less expensive plus it lasts forever.
As I do have some age related dark spots, though, I would be curious to hear about the relative coverage of the various mineral products out there.

Meow minerals….FANTASTIC for age 40! (other mineral makeup settled in fine lines…meow didn’t!)
donnatd Says:
Mineral makeup is a expensive mistake.
It was for me….
I am over 50, have extremely sensitive skin, prone to be oily in hot humid weather, and dry in cold weather.
I have fine lines and acne scars.
I also have rosacea.
I’ve tried different brands of this type of foundation, and they are all problematic.
Mineral make up has a natural sheen that spotlights the fine lines and the scars.
It hot humid weather it sits on my skin, and turns orange.
In cooler weather it hurts to put on the makeup; I don’t know why but it seems to suck the natural oils out of my skin and make it drier.
It does nothing to cover the redness in my skin, but make it more pronounced when I remove it.
And all the while I’m wearing it, I’m aware that something sitting on top of my skin, and I’m self-conscious that others see it, and not me.
Perhaps this works on younger women with more normal skin. But it is not for me.

Our favourite is afterglow after looking at a lot of mineral brands. They seem to be the most open about how it’s made and they have some fab colours. You can find it in UK/Germany/Europe at http://carefreebeauty.eu

I’ve tried several mineral makeup brands and I love most of them. I use almost all mineral makeup products from foundations, eyeshadows, blushes & lip glosses. I’ve been using the following brands, however, I’d like to see more information:
Lumiere
Lauress
Joppa
Dreamworld
Aromaleigh
Buff’d
J.lynne
Blusche

Cataya Sweden Says:

Southern Magnolia Minerals
Both without bismuth. More info about these are appreciaded
Cindy Says:
Im currently using Blusche, a new Canadian brand I think. Try it! It seems promising! Matte finish, shine free, reasonable coverage. No bismuth, no rice powder (which might lead to breakouts coz its starch)… It just has 7 ingredients, that, in my book, means my skin could breathe.
Wendell Says:
Would like your opinion on Jane Iredale makeup, which I used, with very good results, for several years. I also recommend you review Laura Mercier’s mineral line.
I would also like to know thoughts on mineral makeup ingredients such as bismuth oxycholoride, mica, silica; and the SPF claims of the various mineral foundations.
AJR Says:
I would like to share that Bare Minerals caused me to break-out with awful acne that I hadn’t experienced in 15 years. As soon as I discontinued use, my skin cleared. I cannot speak for everybody, but this product made my skin look terrible.
Gretchen Says:
The only makeup I wore was eyeliner and mascara. I hated the feel of foundation or any other makeup so I tanned year round. When I stopped last year I tried various ways to even my pale sun damaged skin but nothing worked and everything felt heavy. one day, I was getting highlights under those florescent lights which shows every imperfection when I noticed BareMinerals being sold at the makeup section. I put on the light foundation with the Kabuki brush and fell in love. Not only did it feet great my skin even looked good under the lights. I was sold. You don’t need to buy and apply all the different products like mineralveil or Bisque ect.. I’m happy with the foundation and the face color true.
One question. BareMinerals has a skin revival night treatment which claims to re-energize and renew your skin. First, it feels heavy and second, like the foundation, you have to choose the right color (light, medium, dark). It feels like wearing makeup to bed clogging your pores. What is up with that?
Jackie Says:
I have used Bare Minerals, as well as Maybeline, and tryed Perscripives as well. I like the Perscriptives most though.
Jenna Says:
I love the look of minerals. Unfortunately all of them so far cause horrible skin problems. I am well versed in chemistry, eliminated bismuth as the most likely culpret, went to “purer” brands. Tried several. ALL caused me peri-oral dermatitis. I am beginning to think the purity claims are not true. And that some people just can’t tolerate Minerals in any form. I have never – I’m now 50, and have never, ever had a problem with my skin. Until the minerals. I am currently in healing mode, it could take weeks, with permanent scarring. I’m going back to MAC which was the best before I journeyed into the mineral world.
I’m welcome to suggestions but afraid my Mineral days are over!
Kristen Says:
Everyday Minerals. I’ve been using this brand for almost a year and so far I’ve got no complaints, but I’d like to know what TBB thinks about it.
Jessica Says:
I use http://www.afterglowcosmetics.com and I love it. Formally a MAC girl – I’m never going back. Unlike most mineral makeup companies, Afterglow also sells organic lipsticks which first got me interested in their brand beyond their Organic Mineral makeup. I also like the fact that they use organic ingredients in their minerals. I also used to use Bare Escentuals and find that Afterglow has a much nicer finish, better shade selection and an all natural mascara which washes off with only facewash.
Jeannette Says:
The Body Shop is launching their mineral makeup on August 1, 2008. I’d love to get your input! I currently don’t see ANY Body Shop reviews. Am I missing them? I personally LOVE their marula oil based makeup and have never tried mineral, so I’m curious as to the difference.
Benn Says:
My local salon has just started stocking Bodyography and its mineral range, Oxyplex, so I’d like to know more about them.
I’m a bit sceptical about mineral makeup anyway – starting to think that it’s the trendy option as it’s supposedly natural, but from the research I’ve done into the bigger brands, they all contain loads of preservatives and crap to pad the makeup out and adhere it to your face. It will be interesting to read your thoughts on it.
Raela Says:
I absolutely LOVE Terra Firma Cosmetics. They are true to what they say being natural, uncoated, non micronized minerals. Their foundation is amazing!!! I’ve tried tons of brands and this one is by far of high quality while still being a pure and natural mineral makeup. I use some of their other mineral items as well as their paraben free skin care and I love it all. If you’re a mineral makeup skeptic, this one is the one to try. You’ll love it. Oh, and it’s Bismuth Free too so no itchies!

I’d like to know about all the mineral makeup lines that are ranked with a low “hazard score.” Some of them include Inika Mineral Concepts (outrageously expensive), SunCat Mineral Makeup, Zosimos Botanicals, Mineral Concepts and Lauren Brooke Minerals (all of which look promising), etc. I’d be curious to hear from people who have used one or more of these lines (what was the texture like; did you experience any breakouts?; how was the company’s customer service? (as most of these can only be ordered online).
Susan P. Says:
Sorry,
I meant to type “low hazard score on the Cosmetic Safety Database – Skin Deep). By the way, if you haven’t visited it, it’s a wonderful resource: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php

Well, I have read over every single comment and did not see one metnion of Raw Minerals mentioned. I tried it, and it turned my pale skin green. I was wondering about the mineral makeup from Eyes Lips Face (elf)?
Reza Says:
I’ve had the most amazing experience with Monave’s mineral makeup, I have really oily skin and acne scars, and I’ve been using their concealer-strength mineral foundation. They carry many more shades than most companies do, which is useful to me because of how pinky my fair skin is. No bismuth, either! http://www.monave.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=ingredients I also love aromaleigh mineral makeup–great prices, frequent sales, and their basic makeup line looks good too. Monave, however, will sell you a small sample kit with a family of shades so that you know exactly what you need and whether you like it before you invest in a full sized product. I like the price, too!

Every Day Minerals is a great product. Tried BE but they cost too much. Tried Aromaleigh foundation and hated the chalky result (have seen that same criticism anout that brand elsewhere.) Everyday Minerals fioundation is reasonably priced and goes on smoothly.
Emmy Says:
BTW, Sandi and Andrea, re: your comments about Aromaleigh Cosmetics, SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME, TOO! The company HAS no customer service to speak of. If this comapany does end up getting reviewed, I’d urge the editors to explore this aspect. The best make-up in the world (and don’t get me wrong, theirs is not that) isn’t worth the hassle of bad customer service.
Leia Says:
everyday minerals for sure! bare minerals burn my skin a little (for some reason only when it gets wet), and i don’t have this problem with edm. the color selection is amazing, the forum is awesome (they give lots of suggestions for shades), the sample kits are FREE (you just pay 3 dollars in shipping) and contain your choice of three different foundations, a concealer, and a blush. There are three formulas that you can choose from, depending of the coverage/luminosity that you would like to achieve. The prices are SO good, too, less than most drug store brands. How can you go wrong, really?
Maria, Finland Says:
Someone asked about Inika Mineral Cosmetics. I also think that they are a bit costly, but I’m quite used to expensive products since I used Joe Blasco for past ten years. Inika mineral powder feels very soft and delicate. I also bought a vegan kabuki brush (amazing, buy it). I had acne and ate two treatments of Accutane, but had some scars left. (Though I had used many home treatments for them, so they are on the light side.) Blasco covered scar depth better, but Inika feels better on my skin. The skin is glowing, it’s soft and natural. I apply it first on kabuki, then with sponge on those places that need extra touch. My skin feels more natural and I don’t need to “hide it”. The make-up comes off quite nicely and did not cause pimples like Blasco did. Inika was my second mineral make-up, I tried initially Isadora (cheap! and not fully “real” mineral). Worked ok, but as a pasty white scandinavian the color was way too yellow. If you have oily skin, I suggest you buy sometype of matifying powder since Inika foundation leaves skin quite oily looking without – I’ve been using left overs from Blasco finishing powder (though it has talc which has been linked with cancer). Inika’s finishing powder that can be used before foundation and after seems to be the next product that I’m trying.
I hope this “review” helped you making a decision in the mineral make-up jungle. Other brands that I’ve been looking are: Sevi Cosmetics, Monave, Crush Groove, Alima, Meow, LVF, Planet Earth, Suncat Cosmetics, Signature Minerals, Mineralissima, Pure Gaisha, Urth Minerals, Lily Lolo.. I’m sure that I’ve forgot some company, but I opt for vegan products that has simple ingredient lists and no talc, bismuth, parabens, nanosized.. etc.
Please continue to write comments about mineral cosmetics, I for one enjoy reading it.

I am using Makeup Forever’s HD powder, though I am not sure if it falls under the category of being a mineral make-up. I was thinking of trying Revlon’s, Loreal and Maybelline’s as well. But please research them for us and I shall know for sure! Cos most ads state that mineral make up is light weight and good for the skin and natural looking but when I tested the revlon’s and maybelline’s mineral loose powder at the counters, it felt awfully thick and heavy like a 2 way cake, and the coverage is very high. So that’s why I only bought the Makeup Forever HD powder so far. Pls help!

So far, my favorite are:
1. Pure Luxe –> i just guessed one time for foundation, and I am right. Also love for the eraser.
2. Everyday Minerals –> so many things to choose. I have problem with finding the right foundie’s colour. I love the brushes. Great and cheap.
3. Fyrinnae –> Love the mineral finishing oil control. Great selection of eye shadows. Too bad it didn’t deliver fast enough.

I’ve tried a bunch of different brands of minerals as my budget would allow.
There were quite a few I rejected for aesthetic purposes. Too much shimmer, did not have enough or too much coverage, did not last all day. Some itched.
That would include: Bare Escentials, Everyday Minerals, Coastal Scents.
I liked Meow Cosmetics a lot, especially they have a line for “peachy” skin. Sort of a combo of cool with some yellow. But, their minerals don’t have enough coverage for my taste.
I like J. Lynne quite a lot. They have a nice palatte.
In the end, I found Monave has the most lasting coverage, even though a combo of J. Lynne’s color works better for me than the combo that I have to use with Monave.
(Basically, I’m in between what most brands call their 2.0 and 3.0 lines, and I’m in between Cool and Neutral.)
As far as drug store brands – Well if the list of ingredients is long, then there is probably very few minerals. I would never compare L’oreal with a real mineral line.
Diane Says:
I like Everyday Minerals and Larenim pressed foundations because they contain neither dimethicone, like Jane Iredale, or cornstarch, like Physicians Formula Organic Wear. Everyday Minerals also has a great pressed eye color trio and some pressed blush shades. Signature Minerals has 2 great veils and lip butters that can double as cream blush (but not over podwer). CMH Essentials is by far the most economical. Curious about Alima Pure, Seva, and Aveda. Prefer pressed to loose for control, like to build from sheer to deeper colors, day to night.
Annie Says:
I bought Mineral Hygienics. You get a “stater Kit” with 3 or 4 mineral powder for your type of skin colour, a kabuki and 2 kind of brush, and tips.
They are recommended by Plastic surgeons and dermatologists.
I found them excellent, easy to carry and stock, and I am very satisfied.
