Non Antiperspirant Deodorant

Hey Guys, There has been enough written about how antiperspirants work, and I think you had an antiperspirant vs. deodorant post that may have been blown up when your server crashed... So for the sake of information availability, could you review how regular, non-antiperspirant deodorant works? Do all formulations include ingredients that inhibit bacterial growth, or just some? How about reviewing a classic: Speed Stick Original Solid Deodorant, Regular Thanks!

  • Historically deodorants included an antibacterial agent like Triclosan but that is not as commonly used these days .
Many products just rely on the fragrance to cover odor. Fragrance and propylene glycol may provide a little antibacterial protection as well. That's the case with this Speed Stick.
Here are the ingredients: Propylene glycol, water, sodium stearate, fragrance, sodium chloride, stearyl alcohol, FD&C blue no. 1, FD&C yellow no. 5.
  • Thanks for the quick reply, Randy! How strong/effective is propylene glycol as an antibacterial agent? Also, does pH come into play as a deterrent for bacterial growth? I see sodium chloride in the list. Is salt used here as an antibacterial agent or something else?
  • I don't haven't seen any data that rates the efficacy of this product. I doubt if the salt or pH plays much of a role in its antibacterial properties.
  • Interesting! Thanks, Randy. It's always a pleasure to learn from you!
  • I have been on the search for a good unscented non anti-perspirant deodorant for a while. Like Randy suggested I think many of them just have high fragrance to mask odor. So many of them stink to high-heavens on their own and the fact that they aren't effective doesn't do them any justice. The only one that I have found works is the Everyman Jack unscented. I am surprised that it is effective based on the ingredients, but for whatever reason it works. The only downside is it is expensive. Aqua/Water/Eau, Propanediol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Sodium Stearate, Witch Hazel Distillate, Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Extract, Calendula Extract*, Myrrh Gum Extract, Alpine Lichen Extract, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Chamomile Extract*, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate. *Certified Organic
